If you are a reasonably self-sufficient male, you shouldn't have anything to rightfully worry about in Detroit.

I've always been told to just avoid the neighborhoods in Detroit, because that's where most of the crime takes place. I've only ever been to the "nice" parts - the DIA, Comerica Park, St. Andrew's Hall, Wayne State Campus etc - so I can't judge what the rest of Detroit is like. From my experiences, however, the only bad things I've encountered are a few drunks. This isn't to say that crime is nonexistent in Detroit, but if you stay away from certain areas then you should be fine. I think it's a shame when people are too afraid to go to Detroit, because there are some great museums there (and clubs and sports venues...), like the recently opened Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. The teachers at my school (a suburb about 20-30mins away from Detroit) actually encourage us to go see these sorts of things, and I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't tell us to check out Detroit's museums if it was unsafe. Don't miss out on Detroit because you're afraid!

Oh yeah: I'm a girl, and I don't feel the need to be freaked out about Detroit... but this is mostly because I never go there alone. Traveling with a friend or two is always a wise idea if you're in an unfamiliar place.

I don't understand why people think Detroit is scary. It's not. I go there everyday for school and I feel completely safe. Of course, it does have its "shady" areas just like every big city, but it's fine. But Detroit is no Chicago.. it really has nothing fun to offer.. unless you want to go to a sporting event.

I personally don't like Detroit. But to say that Detroit is unsafe isn't entirely true. There is indeed a dangerous part of Detroit, but it is restricted to a small corner of the city. Most areas in and around Detroit are fairly safe.

To the OP, Ann Arbor is a safe city, and the areas between Detroit and Ann Arbor are also quite safe.

Detroit seems to be a dangerous place in "8 Mile"
But maybe the movie only reflected the dark side of the city

I wouldn't spend any time in Detroit outside of downtown during an event.

Yeah, downtown is relatively safe, but it is deserted whenever nothing is going on. Added to that there is nothing to do there when there is not a major event.

Regardless of what you think of safety in Detroit, you'll probably find yourself going to your event and maybe getting dinner before or after (There are some great restaurants in Detroit.) There's no real reason to do anything other than that. I wouldn't spend any more time in Detroit than I needed to.

Oh snap, a major movie about one specific street MUST depict the entire city! Of course, Africa is a third-world continent with no exceptions; the middle east is full of countries blowing each other up, jihad style.

alright..bottom line- i bet youll go to Detroit a couple times while at U of M. Detroit is not exactly close to AA.
