Annapolis Chances

Would appreciate any feedback -

My son's best friend has been trying to get into Annapolis, and frankly I don't think he's facing reality.

He's 50% Filipino. SATs are the killer ... best scores are Verbal 600, Math 490, Writing 510.

He's interviewed and is going through all the hoops with getting a congressional recommendation, with the hope that they're going to put him in NAPS.

I think the kid needs to pursue more realistic goals ... he constantly asks me for advice.

He's an OK athlete, VERY involved and excellent in speech and debate, and also in the Civilian Air Patrol program. Scholastically he's just not that strong.

Are the low SATs a sure killer -- or is there hope?

THX

There’s very little hope. It seems he’s decided to try regardless. Then as an advisor you can only urge him to maintain other options – back up plans in case USNA turns him down. Frankly with those scores, he’ll have difficulty making your top state school. He should frankly spend more time on test prep and cranking his school work than his ECs. The type of school that will eventually admit him will be the sort that doesn’t evaluate ECs whatsoever.

Many middle tier students think that they must do ECs to make them attractive when in reality, only the top schools care about ECs – which these middle tier students wouldn’t be admitted to anyway.
