EC's: Soccer since freshman year, Track (11, 12), VP of Ping-Pong club, Pres. of NHS, Pres. of Spanish Honor Society, Officer/Founder Young Democrats Club, Science Olympiad (went to state last year), Presidents Volunteer Service Award (100+ hours), among other things I can't remember I think. This summer I went to Spain with a group from my school, attended the National Association of Student Councils Conference (which my school is hosting in 2007), and am shadowing doctors and possibly doing volunteer work at a hospital.

very solid app. It's obviously difficult from out of state, though I can't say I know many kids (anyone?) from Kansas, so there probably aren't that many of them. Your academics look good, they'll definitely look at the essays as well.

You appear to be the exact kind of out of state student William and Mary is looking for. Being from Kansas and representing that state would also be a bonus in my opinion. I think your chances are very, very good. Please call admissions and let them know of your interest. Ask them how you can strongly convey your interest while living so far away. Now is not to soon to make contact with this top notch admissions staff. You will receive a very warm welcome. I am a rising freshman and will be heading to William and Mary in less than 3 weeks. I was just on campus last week to get my student ID. I am soooooo excited to be going to this wonderful school. Best of luck to you. Again, your chances appear to be very strong. Go Tribe!

Thanks for looking guys. It appears as though both (?) of you attend or will be attending w&m and I'm kind of curious about the social life on or around campus and what there is to do besides studying. I've heard that it can be boring on campus, being in such a small town. Also, are alot of the kids there stuck up or snooty? Thanks again!

Greek is a popular scene at William and Mary, but like all colleges they say that "there's something for everyone". I'm going to say that William and Mary is definitely NOT a big party school, so take that into consideration. I think you have to ask yourself whether or not your fit would be a small, close knit campus, where students and faculty interact regularly. Or whether you see yourself at a large university with a big sports following. With your stats, you are going to have some wonderful choices. Think about where you see yourself fitting in. I can tell you that William and Mary looks at the total applicant. They are truly trying to build a community, so you won't see just "text book candidates". Of course they can be very choosy as nearly 11,000 applicants vied for 1,300 coveted spots for the upcoming freshman class. I became interested in William and Mary in 10th grade. I just liked the overall feel of the campus. Once I delved deeper into the school, I felt strongly that it would be a good fit for me. I have never felt that the students I've come into contact with, the admissions staff, professors, etc. have been stuck-up or snooty. On the contrary. William and Mary is a tough school but you won't feel the cut-throat competitiveness that you may at other schools. Instead you will feel a supportive atmosphere. In any case you will be in class with some of the best and brightest, taught by the best and brightest, in the most prestigious public university, in my opinion. Vist the campus, talk to the admissions staff, try to contact students and alumni to answer questions. Go for William and Mary if it seems like a fit for you. If not, you will have many choices and will find the college in which you will thrive. That should be your main goal. You've done great in high school, keep it up and look for your best fit.

PS I'm sure I'll be doing A LOT of studying! How much and how hard it will be, I don't know yet. Keep posting and I'll let you know how I'm doing! But the thing is, I am so happy and honored to be going to William and Mary. Dull college town, studying hard all the time.............I'll take it! I'm going to my first choice school. This is a wonderful feeling.

Why would you want to do anything besides studying? geez. haha jk. Some people find there's not enough to do. But, people who enjoy W&M can make their own fun. There are classical concerts a lot. People definitely go to the frats, so if you're into that, you can head over there on friday and saturday nights. There's also some big party places off campus, which you'll learn if you get into that scene.

Williamsburg is a small town, but it is also a tourist town. I was with a friend who goes to WVU the other night, and she was making the big deal about how they were getting a Target or Starbucks or something. We have all that good stuff. The Busch Gardens and Water Country are nearby. There's a day in the fall where W&M kids get Busch Gardens tickets for like half price, and they run buses back and forth every 10 minutes. There's go karts and putput. Lots of off campus eating to be had.

And we have fireworks in December (in colonial williamsburg).

There's usually a big concert in the spring, sometimes one per semester. Last year we had The Roots in the spring, and The Presidents of the United States of America in the fall. And some smaller band for Blowout in the spring.

There are hardly any stuck up kids at W&M. Everyone holds the door open for you.

Cool, thanks alot for the replies! Out of curiosity, soccerguy, what were your stats going into w&m and how are you doing there now? (difficulty of classes, getting good grades, etc.) If you would rather not disclose that's perfectly fine, too. Thanks.

I was a student at W&M...I transferred to UVA for personal reasons, however, W&M is such a great school, I really loved my time there. Everyone is soooooooooooo nice at W&M, that's one thing I'm gonna miss and I'm also gonna miss that professors teach classes without having discussion sections with TAs. Anyway, I had a 4.06 gpa and a 1420 SAT, instate, full IB diploma candidate. Hope that helps. I did pretty well at W&M (3.5-3.6), and I was taking some 300 levels.

I had a 1360, and a 3.55 gpa (93% = B+ = 3.5, so on most grading scales it would've been higher), I was also full IB Diploma and instate. It's a low GPA for W&M, but I think my ECs (not academic related) were better than probably 85%+ of the applicant pool. W&M looks for the complete student.

I have slightly over a 3.0 after the first year. Not gonna lie, I completely blew off 2 courses that I thought I could "remember everything from high school" in and basically didn't do any work at all for them, including studying, and those hurt me. They aren't in my major though, so I they shouldn't really be a problem =P Also I'm taking high level spanish which I am not good at, at all, but I need it for my major, so those don't help the gpa either. So the combination of those 2 things hurt my GPA a little bit, but those things considered, I came out fairly well, and above the average freshman GPA.

You can get high grades at W&M, but they are far from given to you. (Class of 2003 had one 4.0 graduate, class of 2004 had 2, not sure about class of 2005)

I got in this year (class of 2009). I had a 1240 a 3.9 with 4 APs: Gov, English, World, American. I was also captain of both the basketball and track and field teams on a varsity level. Student Body President (senior) and VP (junior), NHS, Spanish NHS, DECA. instate.

W&M, especially compared to its Virginian rivals, is known for having very unpretentious and friendly students. This made my experience as an out-of-stater very pleasant.
