I am an International student, currently studying 12th Grade in the United Arab Emirates in a school which follows Indian curriculum CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).

I just wanted to know what my chances are in getting admission into University of San Diego for Aeronautical Engineering.

I dont have GPA grading in my school. The grading is purely based on marks obtained:
9th - 85%
10th - 90%
11th - 80%

If my school was giving GPA grading then my grading MIGHT (coz there is not accurate grading for the Indian curriculum) look like this:-
9th – 3.7+ / 4.0 (coz I got A’s in all my subjects)
10th – 3.7/4.0+ (coz I got A’s in all my subjects)
11th – 3.2-3.4 / 4.0 (coz I got a few A’s and a few B’s)... i know it is pretty bad

I had also recieved a half-fee scholarship in grade 11.

ACTIVITIES :
I have been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders’ Conference (GYLC) in Washington/New York this year.
Swimming
Singing
Made Robot for science exhibition
Created a presentation on the periodic table
Helped the team in coming 3rd in an inter-school robot competition
Part of the school Anti-Smoking Committee
I have been learning Indian Carnatic Music vocal for over 10 years and have give a 2 and half hour concert. I have also been learning Carnatic Music violin for over 3 years.

SAT SCORES:
MATH - 700
CR - 600
Planning to give it again to improve my score (hopefully 1350+).

Going to give SAT II's in November. Will get above 750 in maths, physics and chemistry.

Teacher Recommendations will be really good. Not sure what the school counsellor will write (but got info from previous school mates in US universities that we usually get really good recs).

Am going to start working on the essays when the apps are released and HOPEFULLY they should be good.

Anyway, how is UCSD for Aeronautical Engineering.

Will appreciate all responses. good as well as bad.

Recalculate your GPAs to UC GPA for Sophomore and Junior year To do this, take off the + or -, set A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, +1 for APs, and divide by class total to get UC GPA average. Multiply this by 1000 and this is your GPA point score.

Take your SAT (all 3 point scores), add on your best and second-best SATII scores. Multiply this by .8 and this will give you your SAT Point Total.

Add your SAT Point Total and your GPA Point Total together. Lets call this your Academic Point Score.

Now, theres a point minimum for UCSD. Last years was somewhere around 7440 or so. This years expect anywhere from 7500-8000 depending on just how much the overaccepting of the the Class of 2010 affects things. Add on more to the requirement since you're not from this state.

Now subtract your Academic Point score from the Requirement. This is how many points you have to hope and pray UCSD sees in your extracurriculars and special conditions to let you in. The larger this number, the less likely you're getting in. Smaller, the better.

Some other person I'm sure will say something about those points. You can't predict how much SD will give you for what here, though.

In conclusion, we can't tell you for certain. Go hope and pray with all the others on the What are my Chances board =P.

Oh and UCSD doesn't ask for teacher reccs, though I'm guessing you just copy and pasted this thing. UCSD goes with all the other UCs with the UC Application.

Well, if you were a regular CA citizen, I would say you're in for sure. But as an international student, I have no idea how you stand in the pool. You should work on the SATs a bit, like you said.

Work on the essays now, instead of waiting 'til the apps are released. The essays are usually standard; don't change much.

Oh, and if you want the rubric UCSD uses (that WayyTooWorried just described) then email me at diana.seung@gmail.com and I'll forward you a copy. No spam mail please.

I'm a student from India n wil be attendin UCSD from this fall as a Mechanical engineering major.
UR % are gud,so are ur extra-curriculars(though u may think of adding sum more leadership positions there)
U shud look at improving ur SAT 1 scores though.
UCSD has evaluators who understand Indian transcripts so u dont need to think of ur % in GPA format.
I think u shud be easily accepted to UCSD IF you improve you SAT 1 score (work on english).
Lastly for Aerospace i would advise you to look at a college like GeorgiaTech. Its the 4th best even among privates.
Berkeley,Stanford,MIT,Caltech are obviously better AND TOUGHER-2-GET-IN choices

thanks for all the detailed advices on calculating the GPA and what to improve.

I am working on my SAT I's a lot. I have decided to practice around 30 papers (already finished around 15) b4 october 14.

I had posted the same stats on the Georgia Tech forum (which is my third choice of attending). They had mentioned that i had a chance. But the only reason i am scared is that recently i had given my quarterly exam and got 70% (which is pretty bad), i am hoping to get around 75% - 80% next time. It is due to this pretty low score that i am worried about all the universities that i am applyin to.

Thanks a lot again for the advice.

Cheers and best of luck for all your future endevours

with the UCs, at least if you're from this state, you will not need to worry about either your Freshman or Senior year grades. You'll just need to make sure to hold a 3.0 with no Ds or Fs.

that's no probs its just that i will get a C or higher with ease.

My first choice (Reach) - Georgia Tech
My second choice (actually 3 second choices) - UIUC and UMich and UCLA.....all which i have doubt entering.

It is my second choice as in the rating i give to it for Aeronautical Engineering.

If i dont enter the above mentioned universities then UC San Diego is my next option....if they accept me
