Another Non-smoking campus in Southern California

We just found out that SDSU is one of many campuses in California becoming a fully non-smoking campus. These new rules begin Jan 1st.

Most of the state is non-smoking, so this trend is not new but it may be a cultural shock to OOS students.

Here in Illinois most campuses were already smoke-free, or are now as of the new year. That’s a guideline that is mostly ignored here though. There are still a lot of unofficial ‘designated’ smoking areas, and plenty of people still smoke while walking across campus.

I went to a non-smoking school. No one follows it because it’s an absurd, redicilous, and unenforcable rule. I think a few years ago this was just a publicity thing. Now I think it’s just schools joining the bandwagon.

I know my school CSUN is thinking about converting to a non-smoking school.

I wish it was enforced. I am on a non smoking campus but nobody cares. I get hives almost every time I wait for a bus because of the smoke. Sucks.

I think that smoking while standing around in a group of people is really rude, but as far as smoking while walking across campus goes, I see it differently. I’m a smoker, and I don’t mind at all having to smoke outside, which is a law almost everywhere now. I do find it rather ridiculous to not allow smoking anywhere on campus though. It’s a rule that can’t reasonably be enforced to any real degree.

I’ve attended two schools which are non smoking campuses. At the first school, students just stood on the sidewalk (one of the most heavily trafficked areas of campus) and smoked cigarettes. At the second school they do the same, but the city controlled sidewalks are far away from the rest of the student body. Those that don’t wish to follow the rules just use e-cigs.

I don’t think it will be too much of a cultural shock for OOSers at SDSU. They’ll probably just go to a place barely off campus or switch to e-cigs.

I mean I don’t care if you enjoy damaging your lungs, but don’t do it right next to me. Whenever I’m near a smoker and make sure to audibly express my anger and then I spit.

I go to USC and I think the student government/administration over here too was mulling the idea of switching over to non-smoking. Not sure where they stand now but we have a good number of smokers on campus, particularly outside one of our two major libraries.

Lol this reminds me of my freshman year, I had a TA for history who must have been a chain smoker, either way he smoked a ton. I met him during his office hours to discuss an outline for an essay, we met in front of the library and he was literally smoking in my face as I was talking about my essay. He didn’t mean it obviously but it just happened because he was facing me. Not a pleasant experience, to say the least.

I don’t think I’d care nearly as much if I, you know, didn’t have a physical reaction to your habit.

But you know. I’ll continue enduring hives, muffled hearing, and the occasional asthma attack just so you can break the rules and indulge your habit. Nevermind that I’m not breaking any rules by waiting for the bus…

(This is NOT directed at anyone in this thread. Just at people in general.)

Even UNC-CH is quite restrictive on smoking.

why anybody would smoke is beyond me. and nothing worse then a self important smoker and their smoke cloud standing outside the entrance to restaurants , stores etc…
