My daughter is contemplating a study abroad this summer. She is considering Spain Madrid for Spanish and Beijing or Shanghai for Chinese.

At this point she is open to both options.

One of her majors is Spanish but she does not need any additional Spanish course credit as she has already completed her graduation requirements for Spanish.

She has some background in Chinese. She took AP Chinese in high school but she is more fluent in Spanish than Chinese.

I am interested in what factors other families use to decide on which country or language their kids choose. TIA.

It depends on your Ds goals. Are they to help her in preparing for additional language courses at college, or in learning a new culture and becoming truly fluent in the language of that culture?

My intuition is that a summer in Madrid would help your daughter build on her ability in Spanish and take that ability to a much higher level.

I think she’s quite undecided about her future or what she wants to do, unfortunately. She has alternatively wondered about grad school in International Relations, MBA and law school. I have asked her to take a year and work for a bit first.

I hope a study abroad may open her horizons & help her grow up a little bit. She does not show much interest/passion in Spanish or Chinese. There are large Chinese & Spanish populations in our city and she had never shown any interest in immersing herself, for eg. participating in any cultural programs/festivals put out by the local community.

Where we live, knowing Chinese will definitely make her more attractive to employers.
