Answer these 2 math questions.

1) Sally paints a house in 6 hours. John paints a house in 4 hours. How long does it take if they paint one house together?

2) The price of a dress is 300 dollars after 20% discount. How much is the original price?

PLEASE SHOW METHOD(S). GRACIAS.

2) $375 was the original price. I use the guess and check method

375 x .2= 75
375- 75= 300

1) We know John paints 1/4 a house in 1 hour. We know sally paints 1/6 a house in 1 hour.
1x/4 + 1x/6= 1 (1 is the whole job being done)
Find the LCD

3x/12 + 2x/12= 1

5x= 12

x= 12/5 houses together which is 2.4

For 1) just do 1/( 1/4 + 1/6) because John paints 1/4 of the house in an hour and Sally paints 1/6 of the house in an hour... together they paint (1/4 + 1/6) of the house... hence the method...

Remember it is coming from (1/time together) = (1/time John) + (1/time Sally)

Yeah, that makes no sense to me.

2 ) You did it backwards. HOw can you start out with 375 when you don't know the answer? Can someone show me how to do this correctly?

1) That doesn't make sense. You say 12/5 HOUSES or HOURS? And why does 1/6 + 1/4 = 1?

Oh, Gator makes it make a little more sense.

2) 300= X*.8 where x is the original price

300/.8=375

1) I believe you get that John paints at 1/4 of a house per hour. .25 houses/hour Sally paints at 1/6 houses per hour. Together, that is 1/4 + 1/6 houses per hour. That is 5/12 of a house per hour. A little arithmetic and voila.

^^^^ you completely read the question wrong for number 1. Its asking how long it takes not how many houses.

It's one step from getting it for one house...

ok I see. My bad. I didnt see the 'a little arithmetic and viola"

its cool. i just got lazy
