I've been prescribed to anti-depressants from my physchologist. I'm only a teen and I'm wondering if anyone else here is prescribed as well. Is it this normal for kids our age? I'm scared as crap because I don't know what to expect. I would be thankful of advice but please no criticism, now is defnitely not the time. Thanks.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with you!!!

Depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain, and thus completely out of your control. I know of several teens who take anti-depressants, and I was very close to being on them for a while. There is nothing wrong with you.

No big deal at all. I can understand how you feel though about being kind of scared about not knowing what to expect, but it (the medicine) doesn't do anything except get rid of the depression.

I've been taking anti-depressants for a while and it's not something to worry about.

It's absolutely normal to take antidepressants. Depression affects a lot of teens, and is a naturally occurring chemical imbalance in the brain.

You are not weird or unusual for taking antidepressants; a lot of teens take them.

It's actually pretty common, thanks to puberty. Your emotions fully develop and your reasoning lags behind, and the chemical imbalance is stressed by this. The most important thing is to determine whether or not they're working; if you're still depressed, it's not you, it's the drug. A lot of antidepressants come with warnings that teens may become suicidal; that's more a product of there not being enough/not working with that particular teen.

Nothing to worry about- I have good friends that are perfectly normal and take anti-depressants.

Thanks for the adivce guys, really helped :D

Antidepressants can certainly be helpful but depression is not COMPLETELY out of your control. Presumably your Psychologist ( perhaps you mean Psychiatrsit as in most states Psychologists can't prescribe) is helping you find the thoughts, behaviors, and situations you CAN control that might contribute.

Also, if you don't trust your therapist ( a therapist is NOT a person who just prescirbes your pills) find a proffessional you DO trust; forums are great for support, but not the best place for medical advice.

Don't worry about it! I know plenty of people who take antidepressants, and I never would have known if they hadn't told me.

Antidepressants can do WONDERS- they did on me. My whole attitude towards life is so much better ( a few months after starting) and I really feel like "me" again.

there is nothing wrong with you. studies have shown that depression definitely can be contributed to a chemical imbalance.. Getting help with that part made the depression less severe---which enabled me to work quicker and figure out what the root of it all was.

A lot of people take them.

I'm considering taking them but I've also been taking a medicine for the past 7 months which a side effect is depression so it might get back to normal again when I'm done in 20 days.

But I also hear as a teen it's normal, but I certainly do plan on seeing a doctor sometime by this summer.
