any advice on admission?/what are my chances? (:

I visited the school about a week ago and I fell completely in love with it.. well, i love everything about it except the tuition! I'm looking at their nursing program and it's amazing, and the whole atmosphere of the campus is great and welcoming. I definitely would love to be able to call Northeastern my home.

i also have a relative who attends northeastern, and another who attended northeastern and is an active donor/is friends with people in charge of the business school!

otherwise, does anyone have any advice on getting in?
thank you in advance!

You will most likely get accepted with a major scholarship. Increase your chances by setting a goal in mind (major/long term career goals/life/etc) then make sure your essay, recommendations and everything else show that you are willing to make the commitment to reach that goal. Also try to show why you think you are a good fit with Northeastern.

I have a friend who got into the honors program with statistics just a little bit better than yours. That came with a $20,000/year scholarship, so you should expect to get in with a scholarship. That being said, make sure to spend time making a solid essay and filling out all of the parts of the common app with care. I’ve seen people get denied or waitlisted because they did something silly like leave Boston University in an essay or short answer question instead of changing it to Northeastern.

Best of luck (your credentials don’t need it :)), hope to see you on campus in a year!

oh wow, that’s wonderful news! haha i have my major in mind/what i want to do with the rest of my life and why, and plan on including at least a part of that in my essay. i’m also going to go back at the beginning of summer and meet one-on-one for a tour of the nursing department and meet the faculty, etc. so if i make a good impression hopefully that will help! (:

do either of you think an interview would make a difference too?

i heard stories about people leaving boston university in their essays…that’s ridiculous- you’d think they’d double check something that important before sending it in!

thank both of you so much, i’ll definitely take your advice (and now i know i don’t have to worry as much!) :)

Honestly, you could never visit the school and never do an interview, and you would still end up getting in with a scholarship. I have no understanding of the effects of an interview on you chances unfortunately, so I can’t be of any help on whether or not that’s a good idea. Good luck.

Northeastern does not do interviews. So no, it will not help. Northeastern offers college courses for high school students during the summer and having college credit on your resume may help. But honestly, with your stats, I don’t think it will make much difference.

well then I guess it wouldn’t do much help at all…haha but that’s good to know, thank you!
ill just keep doing what I’m doing then and try to relax about the whole getting-in factor! this was so helpful! (:

Yeah, my main advice would be to just keep your grades up and if you’re looking for a bit better scholarship, maybe take the SAT one more time and see what happens. Otherwise, just enjoy your senior year. :)

WoolScarves makes a good point. If you can get all the sections of the SAT over 700, then you would have a good shot at a Presidential Scholarship. Northeastern even gives full rides to about 100 students each year. Make sure you have a great essay, strong career objectives, and outstanding recommendations.

I’ll definitely keep my grades up and make sure my essay is as close to perfect as I can make it(haha) and my recommendations should be really good, I have a few from teachers that I’ve had for a while and they teach my best subjects so yeah!

the only thing that worries me about taking SATs again is having my scores go down, which might look bad? I don’t know though, if getting 700+ on all 3 sections would boost my scholarship, that might be worth the risk.

thank you! :)

Well, you don’t have to send all of your SAT scores (as far as I know. I haven’t actually applied yet). Just take it and send your best marks.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong though.

Northeastern just looks at the highest SAT scores. So if they go down, it won’t hurt you. Example:

Test 1

600 590 730

Test 2

590 660 710

Test 3

680 690 620

Test 4

550 660 690

What Northeastern will use in evaluating you.

680 690 730

I am also pretty sure that they place greater importance on CR and Math than on the essay, and since the essay is your highest score, it might help to bring up the other two.

yeah I remember them saying they take your best scores out of the three, so thats a good point! that’s definitely something to consider, especially if it brings a big scholarship, thanks sooo much!
