Any good summer enrichment programs for h.s. kids..?

I'm not sure if that's the correct term, but I'm trying to figure out some good ones for a friend of mine to look into. You know, like summer programs you can attend at various universities, or in DC, or heck even in other countries! Programs in social sciences/humanities, or cultural immersion is preferable.

I personally attended two during my high school years and had a great, life-changing experience at one, and a mediocre (yet informative) experience at the other.

Anyway, anyone know of any good ones out there? A few sentences on what it is and where it's located (plus any website links) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't have any specific programs that I'd recommend but this list has hundreds of opportunities.

Hoagies' Gifted: Summer and Saturday Programs

wow, thanks a lot! Very helpful :)

Go to your high school counseling office. These programs send flyers to the counselors. Our counselors keep a file in the college and career center for these flyers.

^^I'm not in high school anymore, and won't be back until the summer when everyone's on break.

Besides, our counselors are really out-of-the-loop, to say the least. My counselor was happy that I applied to Michigan last year, because "Finally someone applies to an Ivy League school!"

You might find some helpful posts under the Summer Programs category.

Click on Discussion Home, then look under Pre-College Issues, and you'll find Summer Programs.

Also, if your friend finds something he/she is interested in, try the advanced search for all dates. You never know - someone may have posted about it in the last couple of years.

Hoagies is a great resource. I know kids who have loved JHU/CTY --a program that has a particularly devoted following--and Stanford's EPGY.

Concordia College in Minn. has wonderful summer language immersion programs, some of which are in Minn., others are abroad. My older S studied German and French at their camps, and loved those programs.

Younger S enjoyed studying philosophy at Duke U's TIP program and Johns Hopkins CTY program.

Boys and Girls State

londonb, thanks. My S is just starting to figure out his plans this summer (late starter) and your list was extremely helpful. A few of our family friends have sent their kids to Stanford's summer program and have loved it. S wants to look abroad but we have no idea where to even start.
