hi folks,
these are my stats:
- SAT I: 620 Verbal, 800 Math
- SAT II: 510 Writing (I know, I know ), 700 Physics, 750 IIC
- TOEFL: 287- decent xtra-curriculars and GPA
- most probably not so impressive essays

Any slight chance of getting in Oberlin/Trinity/Colgate/Lafayette ?
I'll be thankful if you tell me what is particularly slowing me down (well, apart from the SAT Writing)

It sounds like you do have a good chance of getting into the colleges you mentioned. Overall your scores seem fine. You can partly compensate for the lower scores on verbal and writing if you write a really good essay, like boomer01 said. You should show your essays to somebody who can give you suggestions, if possible. If you can, you could also use an online service to help you with your essays. The website raficonsulting.com, which some of my friends have used, does editing, and they are really helpful and good especially for international students. There are also some other good ones out there that I don't know too much about. Anyway, I think the colleges will be happy that you did well on those tests that are most closely related to what you want to study.

Wow, I thought this topic was considered forgotten. Thanks for looking the older topics. Yeah, I know that the essays are very important or at least make a good impression. Unfortunately, it is a bit late to think about thank, 'cause I've already sent the application packages. I do had my essays checked though - at least for grammar and expressions. Let's hope the ideas were interesting and catching enough. thanks again.

You are hoping to pay less than $10K, right?
Knowing all the Bulgarians from my school that apply (ACS - I am BUlgarian aswell), I would say you have no chances especially for lafayete and colgate.

iwantlehigh >> Well, I really doubt that s.o. from Bulgaria is going to be able to pay $35*10^3 annually. I know that my chances are low, but I didn't think that they were that low. If I got higher on the Writing perhaps everything would be much easier.
anyway, what town are you from?

I would say that you are a decent applicant, but not so impressive.
If you could pay all the money, no doubt you would have chances.
But certainly you are not that impressive, and if I were a Lafayette admission officer I would not give you a scholarship of $30000 annually.
BY the way I know two people from my school that are ED to Lafayette and there is no way you can beat them.

I can assure u that with ur scores uve got great chances for each and every university. U will probably not gonna get full tution + room but if u can afford paying like $10 - 15 k anually, ull definitely face the tough decision to chose 1 out of these 4 in april.

Just dont forget that SATs are 1/3 of the whole admission process. Yes they are important but they r not everything !!! Recommendations and essays do matter a lot.

What field/s do u wan to major in ? If it's sth like maths, physics, chemistry, biology, computers (or any kind of science) - univs dont really care about the verbal scores of intl students. Otherwise ppl with 480 verbal wouldn't be studying at caltech :):):)

Just be an optimist and dont listen to those pathetic remarks that u have to get 800s in order to get a bloody admission in a college or university.

I definetly agree with blalabla.
I actually think you've got more potential than those colleges.
Your SAT II scores are fantastic (except for writing..sorry!) and they are a LOT higher than normal applicants.

Your verbal is quite low and your writing score is umm bad.. but as blablabla said, it depends on what you want to major in. If you look at the acceptance people's stats for SEAS in U of Penn, you'll see that one of the person's stats looked something like 580v 800m. Colleges don't really care about your verbal score if your major has nothing to do with literature and stuff.. well, maybe they care a little bit.. but it's not THE factor.

Yes, you might not get full tution but you'll get a decent amount, judging by your stats.

Also, if you check out the Ivy league forums, (esp columbia), you can definetly tell that stats are like 1/5 of the admission process. Essays mean alot. I have definetly learnt my lesson by this year's admission thing: Stats are definetly not a big factor.
Maybe that's because those colleges are ivy's (so they are random).. but even if the colleges you're applying to are all about stats, I can assure you that the majority of the applicants will not have 3x 800 and 1600.
In my opinion, I reckon they'll be wow'd by your 700's and 800 maths.

Honestly, i think you've got more potential than those colleges you listed.
Good luck with the college stuff!

Thank you guys for sharing your opinions. Unfortunately, I don't think my family can afford like $10K, because my parents' income is considerably below that. I guess that probably on-campus work combined with a loan is may be the only option.
Thx again and the best of luck!

hey shockwave,
I might have sounded a little bit harsh, did not mean to.
I am actually in the same boat as you about stats and fin aid, so no hard feelings, really?
Anyway, I am from Sofia, American College of Sofia is my school, and LET ALL OF US GET ADMITTED. I am squeezing my thumbs :)

iwantlehigh, there are no hard feelings :) Everything's cool !
As I said before: the best of luck to all, I hope that everyone will be accepted, if not in the 'first-choice' college, at least in the second- or third-choice.
:)
