I’m a junior at the best high school in NC.
Unfortunately, I have a decline in GPA throughout high school. I had a 3.875UW/4.375W GPA freshman year, 3.625UW/4.375W sophomore year, and likely a 3.375 (maybe 3.5) UW/4.625 (maybe 4.75) W after my junior year. My cumulative GPA will most likely be either a 3.6 or 3.66 UW and a 4.46 or 4.5 W by the end of the year. I’m really afraid that colleges will not like this trend, even though my course load is very tough (I take the hardest classes I can and am taking more rigorous classes than most people at my school). Half of my classes are AP’s (not to be redundant, but this is more than most people at my school) and the rest are honors, with the exception of one or two academic classes that I have no choice but to take. My UW has dropped throughout high school but my weighted has gone up significantly, especially my junior year. Most B’s I make are in AP classes. How will colleges view this??
I’m studying very hard for the May SAT (have never studied for it) because my current score of a 1880 isn’t very good… Awaiting my ACT results. Doing practice tests out of the blue book and reading up on strategies and stuff. Aiming for 2000 or higher for next time.
My EC’s are good: captain of varsity swim/dive team that has won 2 state championships since I’ve been on the team, started own cancer research fundraising/volunteering charity club for my school (has raised a lot of money for St. Jude and other cancer organizations), running for NHS president, ambassador for my high school, I run cross country, and a few other minor things like BETA club and organ donation awareness club. I’m also trying to find volunteer opportunities at local cancer hospitals.
Aiming to be NC Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction
My essays and teacher recs are both going to be great. I’m getting my programming teacher, who I’m friends with and always thought my programs/games were cool, to write one of my recs, which is good considering I’m likely going into computer science. I should have no problems getting good recs from other teachers if needed. I’m already thinking about essay topics and will make sure my essays and supplements are perfect for the schools I’m applying to.
Top 22% of my class (insanely competitive high school, hence the #1 ranking)
I’ve worked as a lifeguard and at a restaurant, will probably work at a golf course this summer.
Probably going into computer science or business, not entirely sure which one yet.
Probably applying to (ranked by interest in declining order):
- UNC in-state; might apply for Morehead-Cain because why not?? It’s worth a shot.
- UVA
- Vandy (legacy)
- UGA
- UT-Austin
- VT
- UMich
- Wake Forest in-state (if that helps at all during admissions process…?)
Applying to safeties like Ole Miss (already automatically admitted), Bama (presidential scholarship as long as I get my SAT up), NC State, and some other schools like that. Might apply to one ultra reach school (Ivy or equivalent) just to see if I get in. It’s always worth a shot.
Mainly concerned about my GPA and its trend. What do you guys think about these schools? Please chance me for them. Also, I’m always up for suggestions on more colleges you think would be a good fit. Help me out, thanks.
