Any hope for these colleges? WILL CHANCE BACK

I’m a junior at the best high school in NC.

Unfortunately, I have a decline in GPA throughout high school. I had a 3.875UW/4.375W GPA freshman year, 3.625UW/4.375W sophomore year, and likely a 3.375 (maybe 3.5) UW/4.625 (maybe 4.75) W after my junior year. My cumulative GPA will most likely be either a 3.6 or 3.66 UW and a 4.46 or 4.5 W by the end of the year. I’m really afraid that colleges will not like this trend, even though my course load is very tough (I take the hardest classes I can and am taking more rigorous classes than most people at my school). Half of my classes are AP’s (not to be redundant, but this is more than most people at my school) and the rest are honors, with the exception of one or two academic classes that I have no choice but to take. My UW has dropped throughout high school but my weighted has gone up significantly, especially my junior year. Most B’s I make are in AP classes. How will colleges view this??

I’m studying very hard for the May SAT (have never studied for it) because my current score of a 1880 isn’t very good… Awaiting my ACT results. Doing practice tests out of the blue book and reading up on strategies and stuff. Aiming for 2000 or higher for next time.

My EC’s are good: captain of varsity swim/dive team that has won 2 state championships since I’ve been on the team, started own cancer research fundraising/volunteering charity club for my school (has raised a lot of money for St. Jude and other cancer organizations), running for NHS president, ambassador for my high school, I run cross country, and a few other minor things like BETA club and organ donation awareness club. I’m also trying to find volunteer opportunities at local cancer hospitals.

Aiming to be NC Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction

My essays and teacher recs are both going to be great. I’m getting my programming teacher, who I’m friends with and always thought my programs/games were cool, to write one of my recs, which is good considering I’m likely going into computer science. I should have no problems getting good recs from other teachers if needed. I’m already thinking about essay topics and will make sure my essays and supplements are perfect for the schools I’m applying to.

Top 22% of my class (insanely competitive high school, hence the #1 ranking)

I’ve worked as a lifeguard and at a restaurant, will probably work at a golf course this summer.

Probably going into computer science or business, not entirely sure which one yet.

Probably applying to (ranked by interest in declining order):

  • UNC in-state; might apply for Morehead-Cain because why not?? It’s worth a shot.
  • UVA
  • Vandy (legacy)
  • UGA
  • UT-Austin
  • VT
  • UMich
  • Wake Forest in-state (if that helps at all during admissions process…?)

Applying to safeties like Ole Miss (already automatically admitted), Bama (presidential scholarship as long as I get my SAT up), NC State, and some other schools like that. Might apply to one ultra reach school (Ivy or equivalent) just to see if I get in. It’s always worth a shot.

Mainly concerned about my GPA and its trend. What do you guys think about these schools? Please chance me for them. Also, I’m always up for suggestions on more colleges you think would be a good fit. Help me out, thanks.

You need at-least a 2050 to be competitive for those schools, plus your gpa is a bit on the lower side. Try applying early maybe that’ll help you. CS majors are usually the toughest ones to get into compared to others. SO, I would say UMich,UT Austin, Vandy and UVA are low reaches

What do you think about UNC, VT, Wake Forest, and UGA? @IBstudent10001‌

I dont know much about those schools, so cant really comment on it. But you can check out the average scores for those universities and see where you stand.

The only thing I’m really concerned with is my GPA, and UVA & UNC don’t report GPA :frowning: @IBstudent10001‌

You should be more concerned about your SAT score. 1880 is too low to be seriously considered at any of these schools.

As stated above, I’ve never studied for the SAT. I’m studying very hard for the May test and am expecting good scores. Believe me, I know my scores aren’t good, but I know I can improve. My GPA is what it is and there’s not much I can do about it at this point. @mnm111

VT (I assume this is Virginia Tech, right? Can’t think of anything else that it would be.) is a definite. The other schools? Then I’d worry, GPA might be a little low, if you bump up the SAT though I think you might be in the running.

But that’s my point. It’s pretty hard to impact your GPA significantly at this point. You can have an impact on your low SAT score by really preparing for the exam.

I understand what you’re conveying @mnm11 . What I’m saying is that I’m afraid that my GPA will be the “weak point” of my applications, given that I do well on the SAT. We’re on the same page  and @MaddyDUMW , glad to hear VT is a “definite”. Luckily, I’m in-state for UNC (53% acceptance rate in-state btw) so UNC is not nearly as much of a reach as schools like Vandy and UVA are.

I think the GPA is the flaw in your app (as I’m sure you know), and if you can bring up your SAT to above 2100 I feel pretty safe saying you could probably get into these schools. If the GPA were higher I think I would be positive, but now I can only say “pretty sure” haha. You sound like a great candidate for them all though! It’s just competition which brings people down. Good luck!

Your GPA is fine.

There are thousands of other applicants and the vast majority don’t even go on CC. So you really just don’t know about the competition.

Just make sure you tell those schools what you can offer to them and how you would be active in the community.

Colleges (even more the top ones) like students who will make a good name for their school and/OR active interest. That to them is more important.

Thank you all! I’m a very passionate and competitive person so we will see how it works out. Can anyone please give me like “high match, low reach, etc.” on my schools?

Your GPA is fine don’t worry. Since your studying hard for the may SAT, Im sure your score will go up significantlyif your score was 1880 with no study. All those schools are within your reach, and I would say you have a shot at all of them. Good luck

UNC: match, not that hard to get in instate
UVA: low reach
Vandy: reach
UGA: match
UT-Austin: high match
VT: match
Wake Forest: high match
