My daughter's in Egyptology. Since Brown has the only Egyptology major in the Western hemisphere and doesn't have any distribution requirements (which allowed her to dive right in her first semester), she loves it. I think one of the first things she said when she found out she had been accepted was, "I don't have to take any more math classes!"

I forgot to mention ... I ended up going to an Indian restaurant last night. I told my husband I wanted bhindi masala, and the place he took me to didn't have it (he swore they used to ...) I ended up having an eggplant dish I'd never had before, with a peanut/coconut sauce. I'm going to have to try to find out how that sauce is made.

It seems u love Indian food to the core of ur heart...great :)
Can u share the stats of ur daughter?

Difficulty of finding people to eat at Kabbob and Curry? That's funny... whenever I suggest going there, I end up with a huge group because everybody wants to go.

My daughter obviously isn't hanging out with the right sort of people!

My daughter didn't have a lot of stats to share. She had a 30 on the ACT (but the math and science portions pulled down the average) and that's it. I homeschooled her and didn't give her grades. She went to Brown to take classes for two summers and so had grades and recommendations from them. She also took some correspondence courses in Egyptology and had a recommendation and evaluated work samples from that, a short research paper and a hieroglyphs translation (naturally, I picked the ones where the Egyptologist said things like, "You will make an excellent Egyptologist some day" and "This is the best translation of this passage I've ever seen").

When she applied, I typed up a description of our home study program, explaining the courses, giving the reading list, etc. I think it was qualitatively impressive, if I do say so myself. We basically used college texts for everything. Nothing we did fit into specific AP courses, so she skipped those tests -- all of which I explained. Actually, a number of courses were different than usual which probably caught Brown's eye as well.

So, her application was so obviously different from that of others colleges were bound to pay attention, good or bad. She also had a personal essay that would either get her accepted or rejected (a triumph over academic adversity -- either schools would find this inspiring or would think they certainly don't want anyone who ever had problems like that; but this is her -- she figured if it turned off a particular school, she wouldn't be happy there). She got into a couple other selective places, but not into some others.

Amazing... Thanks DianeR for sharing this :)

I'm Indian! And I applied to PLME too!

me too, any keralites at brown?

me too, and applied to pleemee (i heard a brown alum pronounce it that way!)

(to the original question) what a ridiculous question

"asian/ pacific islanders" represent 2% of the national population--- at brown they are represented seven times over that proportion

african-americans are represented by less than half of their actual proportion of nation wide at brown, about the same for hispanics as well probably a little slimmer representation though

african-americans are represented by less than half of their actual proportion nationwide at brown, about the same for hispanics as well --probably a little slimmer representation though

i don't think there's anything at all wrong or 'ridiculous' w/ the original question...considering ive grown up w/ mostly indian friends, i would want to know if there was a strong indian population when looking @ colleges

not like it would be a deciding factor or anything, but still

Remember! Brown is named after our skin color, so naturally, there have to be a lot of Indians there/applying there.

^LOL goldshadow :D

and yeap i'm indian too... born, brought up and living in canada though...and applying to PLME as well...

i'm a bangladeshi, and im applying for engineering, but im doomed to failure unfortunately.

sry- just i think the representation is a little ridiculous---it says alot----but when the question was worded-- any indians here??? ---i mean what was this chick thinking the answer was going to be ----oh no none at all? please

I'm an indian...applying to Brown with an intended major in Developmental Studies or Economics

Im indian, applying for economics. I hope i'll get in....cross fingers
