Did any international student admitted to engineering receive “Global Excellence Scholarship” this year? My son applied Rd and was admitted in February. He only received “research scholarship” of $1400+300. His stats are : unweighted GPA 3.97, SAT 1550, 3 SAT subject tests (all >790), 8 AP (3 in the senior year) all 5 s. Graduating from US high school.
same situation with my son as well, he got admitted sometime in Jan but haven’t heard about “Global Excellence Scholarship”. He only received “research scholarship” of $1400+300. His stats are : unweighted GPA 3.92, SAT 1570, 3 SAT subject tests (800,800,790), 8 AP (3 in the senior year) all 5 s. Graduating from US high school.
Did you guys’ sons receive the scholarship? I’m admitted to CSE engineering major as well and haven’t received any scholarship yet but my stats are lower than your sons. I saw somewhere on the other thread that there is an international student got admitted to CSE with 30 ACT and 4.0 GPA , this student received 15k. Thought that this information may help
@miainmay, no nothing yet. The college admission process in America is brutal for “international” students graduating from US high school. They will see their peers from the same high school with much lower statistics receive tons of aid + scholarships and they will get admitted with “no aid” or “waitlisted”.
Haven’t received any merit scholarship notification yet.
Any news guys? When do they typically send that?
Nothing yet
@PA student’s dad, international students = source of revenue for universities, especially for state universities. There are very limited opportunities for scholarships for internationals. School funding comes from taxes paid by citizens living in that state, so in state kids get the most aid, followed by out of state students and then internationals.
@mardong, yes . The irony is, we live in PA, we paid all state and Federal taxes in last 16 years, put Penn state told my son that he must pay tuition as a international student!
Sometimes there is nothing the school can do as state law requires citizenship or at least permanent status to qualify for scholarship or aid. Some parents in California pay taxes but their kids cannot get instate rates (say parents are divorced and NCP lives in California) while other without legal status can. Other states flip that.
I am an international transfer student admitted to CSE with weighted GPA 3.97, 32 credits of technical courses and loads of extracurricular activities in music (currently music major). Still waiting for the scholarship as well… Does anyone know if there is a deadline by which they will notify all the applicants? Thanks! Hope everyone gets some sorts of scholarship!
I was told it isn’t out yet guys so let’s keep hoping it comes by mid april. I don’t want it to be after the deadline of May 1st because I need to know all my scholarships before making a decision.
Below is the response I got from financial aid office
Dear Ravi,
Hello from the University of Minnesota! Thank you for your email.
At this point, we have made all of the scholarship decisions, so if your son has not heard back, it is unlikely that he will get a scholarship. As you know, scholarships at the University of Minnesota are very competitive and we do not have the funds to award every student who has been admitted. I’m very sorry to give you this disappointing news.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
@Ravi S did you tell them you were talking about the international student one? They have different departments.
