Hey everybody:

Sorry to hear the disappointment on international results. But, UChicago and Reed are pretty impressive acceptances and great schools.

To put it into perspective, Swarthmore only accepted something like 54 internationals. I don't know the acceptance rate, but a few years ago, they said that it was between 7% and 8% for internationals. It's probably even lower today. Very tough odds.

Of the 54 acceptances, figure that a little over half received financial aid. So, what's that? About 30 acceptances for aid internationals? From the whole world? So don't take it as a personal rejection.

My daughter spent five weeks in Banglore last fall. She really enjoyed Bangalore. Commuted from her homestay family every day to the Ulsoor area just off MG Road in a little yellow "auto".

Chicago is a wonderful city. If you get a chance, be sure to spend a summer there while you are at UChicago. A summer day, thousands of sailboats out on the lake, with the skyline behind them. Beautiful city. In the winter, it does get a little colder than Bangalore! If the money is the same, go to UChicago over BU.

hey interesteddad thank you for your post! I had a curiosity... where did you finish college? And what do you think about Reed?
I really think it's a fit for me as I want to go to grad school afterwards :)

Williams College.

Being an East Coast guy, I was only marginally familiar with Reed. I've learned a bit about it here, actually. Also, just like Swarthmore, it shows up right at the top of the per capita PhD production charts. That usually indicates an an unusually strong academic focus, which is certanly Reed's reputation.

wow interesteddad, your information was great! U Chicago gets colder than Bangalore? Ouch! Its great to hear your daughter liked it...last fall was pretty chilly I must say. What was she doing here in Bangalore? ...I'd definately choose U Chicago over Boston U, though the city of Boston is so appealing. Both of them wanted additional information for Fin Aid so I can't even compare offers as yet. I also got a conditional offer at UCL in London so I'm even considering that :) I'm not sure how much info you've got about London, but would you rather spend 3 years in London or 4 years in Chicago?

Heh, heh, heh. U Chicago is near the lake. There will be days when the temperature is 0 degrees F / -15 degees C with a 30 mph wind blowing in off the lake. Overall, Chicago is a wonderful city.

I don't know if I could offer an opinion on Chicago versus London. They are very different and it would be hard for me to evaluate the relative merits from an Indian perspective. Post that one on the Parents forum for Mini. He's studied at Chicago and Oxford and has strong connections to India.

She did a study abroad on cities and globization with a group of about 25 students from a number of US colleges. They went to New York City, Buenos Aires, Beijing, Shanghai, and Bangalore. Most of the classroom stuff was lectures and seminars with local political leaders, urban planners, business leaders, etc. Then, they broke up into groups to study specific issues related to development in each city. In Bangalore, she studied the Bangalore-Mysore Industrial Corridor -- the politics surrounding the displacement of farmers and so forth. She mentioned that it was kind of chilly; they had shipped their sweatshirts and warm clothes home from Beijing. They spent a couple of chilly nights sleeping on a concrete floor of an farm building on a silk farm near Mysore.

Yeah, its going to be really tough deciding between London and Chicago! I'm waiting for my decision from Imperial College and I'll be thrilled if I get a conditional offer! Where does your daughter study? I remember meeting a group of Swatties back in December actually. They were hanging out at Koshy's (I'm sure your daughter has heard of it).
