Any LACs that offer accounting as major?

I have a friend whose son wants to major in accounting and minor in either finance or economics. He also wants to attend a LAC in order to get a good liberal arts education. Other than Claremont McKenna ( which I am aware of), what other LACs have a good accounting program?

Pepperdine. Lehigh. University of Denver. Stetson. U of Richmond. But also try this link: Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) has a list of accredited schools of business, as well as a list of accredited accounting programs:
<a href="http://www.aacsb.edu/accreditation/accreditedmembers.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.aacsb.edu/accreditation/accreditedmembers.asp</a></p>

Thanks, didn't see too many LACs though.

Noticed that Belmont University is on the list, it is an interesting small uni/big LAC in Nashville. Lots of music and music industry related specialty courses as well as the usual courses - a bit like Emerson. Son of a friend is there, soon to finish, very happy. This is another one of those pretty good schools that gets no press here.

The University of Richmond and its Robins School of Business have indeed migrated from from the Master's Colleges and Universities I category to the Baccalaureate Liberal Arts category.

Then, there is Rollins in Winter Park Florida. They have a business school and offer a minor classes in business management.

I am not sure if other LAC offer an accounting major/minor. In a strange twist, you should also consider Wharton/Penn for this purpose. In their own words: "The Best of Both Worlds, Undergraduate business and the liberal arts & sciences. Welcome to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania? a place where you can explore your options. Wharton's undergraduate business and liberal arts program will give you the opportunity to focus on an innovative curriculum integrating undergraduate business and the liberal arts and sciences."
<a href="http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/undergrad/%5B/url%5D">http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/undergrad/</a></p>

The statement of Wharton is legitimate. I played with Wharton's curriculum and mine, and the similarities were real. Although THEY may never admit this in Eagles' country. ;)

Xiggi, Thanks for all the suggestions. I will tell my friend to look into Belmont, Bentley, U of Richmond and especially Wharton. Don't know if his son has the SATs for Wharton though.

One of Wake Forest's strongest departments has a superior record of passing major accounting exams and placing grads straight into major accounting firms...Wake has some grade deflation and you have to work hard but the payoff comes quickly. Very high spirited and active student body. Getting in this track is selective once you arrive.

The College of New Jersey, which is a very good school, and it also offers merit scholarships, has an accounting major

Belmont does deserve some recognition on this forum, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone other than a student interested in music business/performing arts-related careers. Nothing the matter with the other programs there, but not necessarily anything to recommend, at least for an undergraduate.

I second Wake Forest - small university LAC feel. Wake has a VERY superior CPA exam pass rate.

Can't remember all the places I have read this (in accounting journals).

Reid makes a good point, I was a little surprised to see it on the list as an accredited program of accounting - probably all those Moms and Dads of musicians insisting on some practical fallback education ;).

The OP inquired about Liberal Arts Colleges offering accounting majors. While I am sure that Taxguy is aware of the universities offering the best programs in accounting, it may be worthwhile to post the ranking of the CPA Report. This may help keeping this thread on course and not stray too far of course with anedoctal evidence.

If you want acct. with liberal arts, check out any of the Jesuit schools listed by AACSB.(eg. Fordham, Saint Joseph's, Xavier, John Carroll). They will combine liberal arts core curriculum, with study of any major that is taken by the student. Some will have larger student bodies than others, but many of them are 5500 or under in terms of undergraduate pop.

Check out Trinity University. They have a 5 year masters which, I believe has a good rep in the area.

I believe Christopher Newport University has a high CPA exam pass rate. (This from a tour a couple of years back).

Along the lines of IRishbird's thinking, also check out what Marist and Fairfield U might offer in terms of accounting.

Hendrix College in Conway, AR is an LAC which offers a major in Accounting. It is worth a look. It also offers a Master of Arts in Accounting.

Check out Holy Cross top 25-28 US News ranked LAC with great accounting program. For a small school, HC has several Fortune 500 alumni.

A more concentrated study of accounting may be undertaken in the MS in Accounting
