I’m looking for liberal arts schools in the Northeast that has both a biology major (B.S.), and an animation major or an art major with a concentration in animation (I’m not picky on the type of degree for animation). The school I’m currently at has a horrible art program, and has only one animation course that rarely runs.
My main interest in animation is creating animated characters in films, cartoons, or video games that have a story. I prefer to work with 2D animation or traditional animation; I’m thinking of an animation type similar to the short films made by students at CalArts or SVA.
Unfortunately, I’m still financially dependent on my parents, and they refuse to let me go to a college beyond the Northeast. So, my options are limited for finding schools with an animation program. My interest in biology complicates things more. I’m also interested in possibly becoming a researcher in ecology, and working with the environment and animals. I’ve never figured out whether I loved animation or ecology more; I’m equally interested in both (all of those “what career/major fits you” quizzes/tests never helped me figure that out). I would like to dual major in animation and biology.
I’ve already started my applications for these schools:
- RIT
- Syracuse University
- RPI
- Northeastern University
- Tufts University (combined degree program with SMFA)
- UMass Amherst
In a nutshell, I’m looking for liberal arts schools that have:
- a good animation program (prefers 2D animation and character design courses)
- a biology program (B.S. degree)
- located in the Northeast (New England and NY, my parents won’t let me go to schools in PA or any further than that)
If you guys have any suggestions on any schools that I should consider, please post a comment on this thread.
