Any Luck Doing 2 College Visits/Day?

We did plenty of 2-schools-in-one-day:

GWU / American (with Georgetown on a different day) - our hotel was right at GWU
Bryn Mawr / Haverford
Tufts / Brandeis
Wellesley / Clark (involved high-tailing it to an afternoon session at Clark, but do-able)
Smith / Mt Holyoke
Case Western / Kenyon (this one was the most rushed - we stayed near Case and got there very first thing)
We would have also done Carleton / Macalester on the same day, but it didn’t work out.

I don’t see what’s the big deal at all. If you don’t live near these colleges, you need to pack a lot into your day.

You get there early and either drive or walk around the town and the college to get your bearings and see the surroundings, you go on the first tour / info session … You make sure to hit the student center, get the vibe, pick up on a couple of student newspapers and check out what’s posted … Frankly, unless you’re an athlete, I don’t see the need to tour sports facilities. And while my kids did sit on classes at a few places, that really doesn’t add much information to the whole thing, IMO.

While I think NU / U of Chicago is a lot in one day (because it’s not easy to get from one campus to the other - it’s a solid hour no matter whether you go El, car, or taxi), it’s likely doable with the right planning.

JHS – I think it was the alacrity at which DH and S went through Ontario (without stopping for food, since it was Passover and they had stocked the car with KFP food) was what surprised them! DH has taken that route twice – once from Chicago to Cambridge, and then Ann Arbor to Ithaca. It is a route that requires advance planning, however, since passports are now required.

mathmom, I noticed that S2 liked the afternoon schools better than the morning ones, too.

Agree that American/GW/Georgetown (pick two) are definitely doable in one day. JHU/UMCP is a bit more dicey, as there is I-95 and heavy local traffic to contend with. S2 was born at Georgetown, but had the sense not to mention that in his app. :)

We also did several 2/days: RPI/Syracuse, RIT/Cornell, BU/Tufts and WPI/UMass-Amherst. We were also going to do MD/JHU and Penn/Del, but a blizzard got in the way last year. In bigger cities it’s very doable and even with 45-60 minute drives it generally works, as you aren’t up against rush hour. I agree with the poster that noted you will see the same faces - we did on the NY State trip, as it was over the NJ November teachers convention and everyone was from NJ.

Maybe CC should get into the business of chartering buses for some of these trips.

One of the issues is how a school schedules its official “visits.” Many will schedule activities betwen 10 am and 2 pm, so it’s hard to fit in two. We did an unofficial vist to a school that was sort of on the way to another school…D could tell by walking around that it wasnt her kind of place.

We also visited two urban schools that each had two campuses. It took the whole day to visit both campuses.

Brandeis in particular was very conscious of the fact that the students were often doing it and another college on the same day – they handed out very clear and concise directions from their campus to basically every major campus in the Boston area, and we saw a lot of the same faces on our Tufts / Brandeis day and even a few at the Wellesley day the next day.

I liked Brandeis’ straightforward acknowledgment. It said “we know you’re checking us out, we’re not afraid of the competition, we don’t have to pretend they don’t exist.”

Has anyone done Caltech and Harvey Mudd in one day? On the map, and from the Internet sites, it looks very doable, but there may be something I don’t know. We are thinking about doing that sometime this June.

Yes – that was another 2/1 we did (now that I have thought about it). Caltech and Mudd are easy to do in one day. It’s about a 30 minute drive from Pasadena to Claremont, 45 minutes in traffic. I highly recommend ■■■■■■■■ the departments at both schools. Our experiences at each were very telling.

If you like pastrami burgers and huge bags of fries, go to The Hat. [The Hat, World Famous Pastrami](http://www.thehat.com/loca.htm)
For amazing donuts, go to the Donut Man (formerly Foster’s). [The Donut Man - Glendora, CA](http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-donut-man-glendora)

They are both near Mudd, and there is another Hat in Pasadena. We also have a food tour for East Coast schools, too. :)

I’d love to hear it–we’re doing a trip in two weeks–Amherst area, Boston, Providence, Middletown, and (maybe) Princeton. (Theoretically also Philly, but I predict we will run out of steam and come home.)

CountingDown, thanks a bunch. I will copy and save your comment for our trip.
