Hi all-

I'm going into my junior year at UD and I'm a pretty active CC member. If any parents, pre-freshies or prospective HS students have any questions about Dayton, you can post them here or pm me and I'll do my best to answer. There seems to be a few other current UD students on here and I invite them to answer posted questions too!

Have a good summer, and to some of you, WELCOME TO UD! :D

21 Meal Plan vs Silver Plan

The silver plan you get $1230 a la cart dollars and it is $220 cheaper. So the break even point is $1450 dollars.

I assume once you run through you $1230 you can just pay each day.
Right?

I am not sure how expensive a la cart food is at UD. Could you give a few examples? My son eats a lot, eats healthy most of the time and drinks bottle water.

If he’s a bottled water drinker definitely have him get a reusable water bottle. All of the dining halls have drinking water available for free but the bottles of water are expensive.

Both my freshman and sophomore years I had the lowest flex plan (flex was later renamed to debit). I am a relatively small girl and never ran out of money on my flex/debit during the school year. I always ended up buying my guy friends lunch and dinner for the last week of school!

As far as examples go… the cheapest sandwich is a pb&j and was $2.10 my freshman year. For a pb&j!! the prices are high, which really sucks, but you’re required to have a meal plan freshman year and any sophomore in a dorm (not apartment) is required to have one sophomore year. If you run our of your debit plan, you can either load more money onto your flyer express, or you can pay with a bank debit card/cash.

For guys I would definitely recommend having plenty of food in their room.

Unfortunately I don’t know much about the meal plans. I do know that the big advantage for guys is that they are guaranteed a meal through the semester.

My son will be an incoming Freshman in Engineering. Our family will fly out (from metro Denver) in August for the orientation / move in / etc. He is a casual dresser, so we will get him some nice clothes before then (for Convocation, etc.)

We are also interested in the Family Weekend in October. We have a daughter in school, so we might not be able to get there until Friday afternoon. A schedule of events is not yet posted.

^ expect the family weekend schedule when the fall semester starts.

Also, most parents begin arriving for family weekend on friday afternoon/night.
