I'm from the northeast and I'm afraid that the "southern culture" will not be very inviting for northerners. Anyone have firsthand knowledge of this, either positive or negative?

this isn't exactly the same, but I'm from the south and I attend high school in the north. There definitely seems to be a different culture in different regions of the country. And at first it was hard and a shock for me. Everyone was nice but they were just different. There are still people who make fun of me for being from the South but for the most part everyone is really nice to me. And I'm sure it would be the same for you. I mean there are differences and there are times I just don't feel like people understand where I'm coming from, but that is my challenge, and I'm really really glad I have had the experience of living somewhere different from where I grew up. I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience for you too. Just as you would accept someone from the South, Southerners will accept and welcome you!

I'm from the northeast too, and that's my only reservation about it (not that there's anything wrong with the "southern culture"- just a little different). On one hand I'm a little worried about applying to a largly southern school, but on the other I want more than anything to leave the north lol. I'm like...a liberal country/all things southern fan, so I think that puts me in the middle somewhere. =P

Every southern school I've visited, didn't have a chance to get to UNC yet, I've spoke to some of the kids about it and they all assured me that there's a total mix of people there, and that no one culture or political viewpoint or whatever dominates anything, that everyone pretty much gets along regarldess of the initial diffrences.

i'm from mass. and applying to UNC.... i'm more concerned about UNC's close proximity to Duke... do UNC students have an inferiority complex to duke?

KY -- UNC students have a healthy rivalry with the Duke students and don't feel the least bit inferior. UNC students have tons of school pride and are generally a very happy bunch. The schools are far enough apart geographically that the student bodies don't have very much to do with each other -- unless they are at a game! There are lots of academic and artistic collaborations, though, and under those circumstances, everybody gets along fine.

ky - I read your post and the soundtrack from West Side Story bounced into my head :) Regardless of how the media plays up the rivalry, it's really not something to be concerned about.
