ING is so cheap is because its a 100% online. so they can give you more money by having almost no employee's. problem is when you have a problem and want to sit down with a rep. or want to have more options with you money, it has drawbacks. I currently have my money in a money market but it takes some research to choose the right now and not every one has that kind of time.

Riptide, I agree with you. I checked out the ING website and while they offer some great stuff, I do not think an online bank would be very conveinent for me, as I am very much an in-person type of person! Also, I don't feel entirely secure sending my money someplace over the Internet. I would rather not make that much interest at Bank of America and have that convienence and security. Besides, I'm not using a savings account as an investment, but more as a place to put my money so I won't spend it.

This thread has been very helpful to me because now I know what kinds of questions to ask!

You should have no problems getting & using the money from your parents. I was unaware of people having issues depositing money in other states. I've withdrawn money in other states with no issues, but apparently depositing money is the problematic thing. If you go inside the branch you should have no problems- specify your state on the slip, just don't go to the atm to deposit & don't expect the money to show up immediatly (since they have to route it to your home state bank). If your job allows you to set up direct deposit of your paycheck, I'd at least try to get that set up so that you can avoid having to go to the bank.

Your friend failed, sweet. There is 24 hour service.

It is true that low overhead allows them to ffer low rates. However, look at HSBC. It's one of the biggest banks in the world and has an even higher savings account rate. It even has interest checking.

I took out a Campus Edge account my junior year in high school and I've never had any problems with it that weren't my own fault. Just make sure you don't overdraw on your checking account. I made three debit purchases on insufficient funds amounting to $20 and I ended up paying the bank $145. Just get the savings account and tie it to your checking for overdraft protection and you'll have nothing to worry about.
