**Safety/b
University of Washington
University of Utah (in state, LAST RESORT)

Qualities I Want In Schools

-Big party/Social scene
-Open Minded (slightly liberal, doesnt have to be extreme)
-Class Unity/School Spirit
-Big Sports Teams
-Active Intramurals
-Not a huge commuter school
-Good Weather (not a huge concern but would be nice)

About Me
The best way i can think of describing me is A LOT of people are surprised by my academics. I look like a jock who is very social and goes out and parties every night (which i do a lot of the time, ha) but yet I still have the stats of the bookworm who never leaves the library. I'm very very outgoing and social and just wanna take life as it comes. I'm not really sure what i wanna go into so i would like a good overall school that if i switched majors it wouldn be the death of me (most likely going into business though i think). Some of my hobbies are sports (all kinds), photography, and film making.

4.0 uw GPA, 34 ACT, 10+ AP, Student Body President, Varsity Basketball (don't plan on playing in college but will DEFINITELY wanna play intramurals and stuff)

If you are looking for more safeties you might look at UC-Boulder and Penn State… both have big sports cultures and party scenes as far as I know. Penn State also has a good business program from what I’ve heard.

As for reaches Dartmouth has a big sports culture and party scene but you’d have to deal with snow. Although you would have to deal with snow at a few of your other choices. Same goes for Williams/Amherst/Bowdoin/Bates/Middlebury.

If you are looking for a united student body NYU might not quite fit that description… from what I’ve heard and read the student body isn’t very united because of the city setting and not as big into sports as most of the schools on your list. But you would have to talk to someone who goes there to get the lowdown on that.

Maybe UMiami as another match?
UGA or Alabama as a safety?

A lot of those qualities that you want in a school aren’t found in your choices. Examples: Big party scene – not really found at Brown, Cornell, or Northwestern. Not that those schools are boring or anything, just not party schools at all. Sports/school spirit – if it’s really important (completely understandable – I would die if I was at a school without major Division I sports), maybe re-think Brown, Cornell, and NYU. Good weather – brutal winters at Wisconsin-Madison, Northwestern, Cornell, and Michigan. Just my thoughts though; I suppose those schools all fit you well in other ways!

Is there a reason you don’t have Duke as a reach? It seems like an obvious choice that fits all of your wants (other than maybe intramurals, which I have no idea about). I’d also say definitely keep Vanderbilt, as it also seems like a great fit.

I’d say DEFINITELY cut NYU. It’s not big on class unity or sports AT ALL. I’ve actually been spending a lot of time with NYU students recently and not a single one cares abotu school sports. Also, while many of them love their school, they don’t have “school spirit” in the traditional sense. The student body isn’t really unified at all—especially since there is no real campus. Great school, but it seems out of place on your list, esp. given your wants.

I love Brown, but it is also not big on sports, so you might want to cut it, especially if you are looking to make your list shorter. Also, if your looking to make the list shorter, you should think hard about just how bad you can stand the weather being–there’s a big differance between the weather at UCLA and that at Norhtwestern! While you can’t necissarily hold out ofr Cali weather, you might want to avoid some of the schools with REALLY intense winters.

Yeah I may have to look into duke instead of northwestern (or maybe just add Duke). I was thinkin of droppin NYU all together anyway but i wasnt exactly sure, i just like stern ha.

I know brown doesnt really fit my description but for some reason i just really like it there. I visited while on vacation with my family. Not really sure abot Cornell either but i think im going to apply.

Also about the weather, i know schools like michigan and wisconsin dont really have the greatest weather but they have so much other stuff that im way interested in that its kinda hard to pass up.

Do you guys think UNC is a good pick for me still?

Reach- UVA (wonderful weather, and fits much of your criteria)

Match- PennState (great school spirit, definitely put effort into the application for the honors college (Schreyers… can’t remember the spelling b/c it will give you the stellar academics and close attention of a small LAC, while you still get the affect of a large public. Pennstate itself is a safety, but the honors college would be match material)

Safety (I THINK) - University of Pittsburgh (great school and wonderful financial aid. Pittsburgh has cleaned up a lot recently, and it has some similar things you liked about NYU, while still having a campus. I have several friends with your stats who are at the honors college for free, although they were in state)
Also, I think the suggestion of University of Maryland as another safety is a good one.

UPitt has rolling admission, so if you sent your application in early september or late august, you’ll hear by october, eliminating the need for other safeties. The app is easy, although they don’t use CommonApp. Just fill out your information and stats, and they request a writing sample, which NEED to send in if you want financial aid and honors college.
