Any Physics Majors Out There?

Hey, so I've been wondering how well the dartmouth undergrad physics program prepares one for graduate school? Dartmouth being more of a LAC than anything, are you physics majors happy about the research/professors/rigor of classes? Are there clear disadvantages? I do want to double major in a humanities-based topic, maybe history or philosophy. Are there any physics majors who like both worlds but still focus on a physics career?

In short, what has been your experience with Dartmouth physics?

Any help is greatly appreciated.....

anyone???

i asked my friend, a phys major who is applying to grad school now, for his thoughts.

he says:

yes, the undergrad program does prepare you well for grad school, however it allows for room for slop. If you do just the bare minimum for the major you will be at a disadvantage to other applicants in grad school, bc you won’t have seen some of the graduate material in the physics major. At the same time it will be harder to get into grad school if you don’t take more than just the bare minimum major.

and yes there are plenty of physics and humanities double majors, although I don’t know their grad school plans. I have a friend who is a physics philosophy double, and he’s on the Edinborough fsp now.

So there’s one person’s perspective.
He’s also actively involved in research, and has been since sophomore year.

That’s great. Of course anyone looking to do graduate work in physics should pursue the advanced track. That’s what I would do if physics is still my top priority in a couple years. I’m just looking at Dartmouth as a whole and seem to love what I see, especially in undergrad life, but I do want to make sure I can still get a rigorous treatment of physics. I was doubtful that a liberal arts focus like Dartmouth’s would provide me with that, since Dartmouth’s physics program is not necessarily considered the top in the country.

Rightnotleft, where is your friend applying to graduate school? Do you know if he is confident of his chances there? How active has he been outside of the campus? Any information you can get from him would be great. Thanks a lot.
