Boarding schools (especially the ones w larger student bodies) tend to have very strong athletics, because:

  1. they have the best atheletic facilities, and
  2. they recruit athletes.

Almost all boarding schools have day students, so it’s not necessary to be a boarder.

Many boarding schools varsity teams will be filled primarily with recruited athletes (as silly as it sounds to be recruited at 13 it happens). NMH does have a very strong boys basketball team, and the boy’s varsity team is ranked in the top 10 by ESPN and others - not just for boarding schools, for ALL high schools in the US. I have heard that Williston Northhampton is very good in the arts. NMH has a beautiful new arts center with private practice rooms, a photography studio, ceramics studio, etc. but we saw several schools that had great arts programs and a few schools specialize in the arts (Walnut Hill near Boston is one - it’s a girls school).

In the DC area I have friends with children at Sidwell Friends (day school) and they are very happy with the school. The Obama girls also attend. I am sure it offers everything a child could want or need and it is very rigorous. Culver Military Academy in Culver Indiana is also well regarded. They accept boys and girls. I hope this helps!
