Any Questions for a current student?

And yes, all during those breakfast times, you can use the waffle machines with the "D" in them. However, I suggest skipping breakfast and using the money for lunch at the marketplace. Breakfast is the most repetitive of all the meals at the Marketplace, with pretty much every day having the EXACT same food. Plus, if you go to lunch, they serve higher quality food (especially desserts) because alot of the faculty eats there. If you can ever get a professor to invite you to the faculty dining room on West, GO! The food there beats out any cafeteria food and it's a really nice place.

how are the download speeds and bandwidth limits? i checked on the duke website that bandwidth is limited to 5 gb/day but that was an article in 2003, is it still true?

Both the wireless and the ethernet connection have worked well for me. I haven't encountered problems with the bandwidth limit, but I don't do much with p2p programs here so it's not like I'm uploading a lot.

Anyone want to give an overview on Duke's food? Good mix of stuff or lots of southern food, delicious or crap, the delivery service, etc, what's the deal?

Also, about the AP policy, I can only get credit for two AP tests towards graduation, if I read this correctly, but the rest can give me placement into higher level classes?

Theres a bunch of places to eat on campus, mostly on west. They're all generally really good...I'm satisfied. The Marketplace where freshmen eat is ok...the food really isn't that great but most people learn to get used to it. The BEST thing about Duke food is Merchants on Points. There are a bunch of places that deliver on points...everything from pizza to burritos to chinese. It's pretty fantastic...I definitely abuse the on points system. There are also a bunch of restaurants off campus and in places like brightleaf square if you want to walk a bit. Overall I'm 100% happy...if you want something you can usually find it.

Yep, that's how the AP Policy works.

RE: APs - only Trinity folk are constrained to two APs; Engineers can count mostly everything, though only two can count towards the five required Trinity distribution Social Science / Humanities classes. And we don't take stats...

Yea, the food is pretty good. The Marketplace food tends to be a bit heavy on the southern food (fried chicken, fried okra, pork chops, etc), but has a pretty wide, if not somewhat repetitive selection. As for the off campus restaurants within walking distance of East, the most popular by far is the Cosmic Cantina. It's an awesome little hole-in-the-wall place thats open until about 4 am. Also on 9th is a place called Bali Hai Mongolian Grille that alot of kids go to because its fun and cheap. If you have a car, you can go down 15-501 and there are alot of chain restaurants there (Chili's, Outback, On the Border, etc). Overall, the food selection is very good.

cosmic cantina=a way of life.

are you guys in the marching band and pep band, or do you know anything about it? im interested in joining, but ive never marched before (i play the flute).

I happen to be in the marching/pep band (on trumpet) and its awesome. It's really a great group of people to spend a lot of time with and get to know outside of class. The fall semester consists of strictly marching. There's 2 rehearsals a week (about 1.5 hours) and on Saturday there will be the football game. Road games are cool, you don't pay a thing, and u get to go to other schools.....yet still watch our team lose. NO marching experience is required. We're not that intensive by our drill, and everyone will teach u what u need to know. There's no band camp before classes either which is nice unlike other ACC bands.

Then, of course, there's basketball end of fall/spring semester. Which makes being in marching band even better. You don't need to do mb to be in PB, but when it comes to assign travel later on for March, having done mb helps a lot in deciding where you go. There is less of a time commitment for PB, which is nice because students tend to take a more demanding spring schedule. There is no tenting in the rain/cold, waiting in for 10 hours before a game, sleeping on concrete, etc. (unless you really want to). Just show up about 1.5 hours before the game and be ready to cheer. Best EC i've done at Duke so far.

that sounds awesome. does the marching band compete or just play at football games?

Do most people still go to the football games even though Duke sucks at it or is the stadium pretty empty?

Students do attend football games and sit in the student section. Mainly because they spend the entire morning tailgating in the parking lot and decide since they're there they might as well go to the game. The stadium is never filled...except when VaTech came and all their fans filled it up. Football games are fun though and the band is there for every game (the entire time). But yea...it's basically all at Basketball anyway :)

no, students don't really attend football games at all, especially compared to any other ACC school, or really any other D1 probably...we never got close to crowding our student section for any game this season, which is a real small section of the stadium compared to a lot of other schools to begin with, and by halftime the students are usually about 3 rows deep...the majority of people who tailgate either dont make it to the game or just stop by for a quarter or so...

Anybody know anything about the dance team at duke?

Yay! I'm a dancer too! Anyway, there are a few options for dancers.

There are the Duke Dancing Devils, who perform at football/basketball games, and also compete in nationals (they're pretty awesome too...I believe they've won more than once!). It's traditional "nationals" kind of dance...pom, hiphop, jazz...that kind of stuff.

There are also a few repertory groups. There's ballet repertory, which I'm hoping to audition for next year. There's also modern repertory and african dance tech, if you're interested in any of those.

Plus you can always opt for taking classes if you decide you aren't ready for dance team...5 levels of ballet, jazz classes, modern classes, other random classes. PLUS a studio right off east that offers 1 month workshops in random kinds of dance for $50-$100 a session (generally in the winter).

I've been VERY happy with dance at Duke...and though I don't know much about specifics, perhaps I will one day:)

Hi all,

As a Math 32 TA, I can tell you that classes up through 103 are graded on a standardized curve - meaning all sections are roughly equally difficult. I can explain more if you want.

Oh, and your 5 GB/day limit is your upload limit - but even if it were the download limit, seriously - 5 GB/day? What could one conceivably do with 5 GB in a single day?

Did you participate in the FOCUS program? If you did, was it enjoyable?

Yep- I participated in FOCUS and I regret my decision to. I knew that I should've gone with my instinct and dropped the program after the first Monday/Tuesday of classes...

I liked FOCUS. The classes were interesting and it boosted my GPA.
