It seems like not many Yalies study abroad - is it discouraged by the uni? Do people still do it? How hard is it?

probably because they love Yale so much.

Many schools when deciding whether to admit somebody in a particular major, involve members of faculty. Since the classes have to be well rounded, Yale cannot be 30% history and 30% English... Also, if the Dean of admissions is for example a math major, chances are he or she will look at math appicants more frequently and comment on how promising they are.
In that light being undecided is not such a bad thing.

psychic-
tons of Yalies study abroad! it's totally encouraged by the University and it actually stressed as an essential part of the Yale education. with Yale, you can go anywhere. i'm going to Brazil this summer!

Oooh where in Brazil are you going?

edmyale - i was browsing through the website, and i guess i was talking about study abroad during the year... only about 100 students do it or something, which seems low. i love everything about yale, am just a little worried about the study abroad aspect which is really importnt to me

psychicsspies-
when i visited yale last spring, the student info session leader at the admissions office talked about studying abroad. he said that while it's certainly encouraged by the school, most students really love Yale life so much that they can't bear to tear themselves away from campus for a semester or two.

hope this helps.

gavroche- I'm going to Paraty, a city between Rio de Janeiro and Salvador to do my intermediate year of Portuguese and Brazilian lit.

psychics- if you want to do it, there are so many opportunities.

chopsticks- you're /so/ right! Yale would like us to take a "junior term abroad" but that's sacrificing a whole year of Yale. so a nice alternative is going away during a summer. studying abroad + the most Yale time possible = :D

Chemistry majors are rare at Yale?
