I haven’t run into too much trouble with that.
Up until a few years ago, we could easily get “cancel by 6pm” reservations. Loved that flexibility. Now that is a rarity on my searches. For summer 2022 cross country drive, most reservations were “cancel by 11:59pm day-prior”.
If somebody know of a hotel chain that typically still allows cancels up to 6pm… please post. I will give it priority in future searches for cross-country trek.
We plan ahead, with cancellable reservations. I tried to be cheap once, and of course we had to cancel – learned my lesson. We have food issues to contend with, and generally stay at places like a Residence Inn so we have a kitchen.
It’s nice to have a kitchen. For our cross-country treks, we do try to have rooms with fridge and microwave. We carry a cool bag and usually opt for a sandwich or hot pocket or other frozen meal (and maybe beer too) in the room instead of going out to dinner. It’s partly to save money, partly because 10+ hours in the car exhausts us.
We always make hotel reservations before we hit the road. We also like a microwave and refrigerator in our room. We carry a cooler with stuff to make sandwiches for lunch or sometimes dinner. We also bring some beer and wine for the room. Many times we will grab takeout and come back to the room to eat.
We did cross-country and back last summer. Saw my sister in KY. niece in KS, Grand Canyon, SLC (went back to the neighborhood where I lived in 1966-68), saw S1 in SV and other friends in northern Central Valley. On the return trip, we went through small towns in Iowa (more quilt murals) en route to the towns where my dad’s family settled and we’re buried. We always book rooms in advance, though we sometimes change our route along the way. On this trip, once H discovered Culver’s, our routes were based on their locations. Most of our trip back from CA was along non-Interstate roads. 6700 miles.
Shenandoah and Rehoboth don’t qualify as road trips – only three hours each way.
If we have the dog, we do Red Roof Inn. Free pets.
I did a solo quilt road trip in late March – went to southern VA, through TN, hit a couple shops in southern KY, visited my sister south of Louisville, up through Indiana, where I took side roads and found small towns with beautiful murals. My destination was Shipshewana, an Amish town beloved by quilters, but it paled in comparison to the murals. From Shipshewana, I visited a friend in Toledo, was going to see a CC friend in PGH but she had a family emergency, so instead went through eastern Ohio for a couple more quilt shops. Total trip was about 2200 miles.
We did a decent chunk of the Blue Ridge Parkway in June.
Am heading to my aunt’s memorial in two weeks in eastern Kansas, so will road trip to Missouri Star Quilt Co.
