Any transfer students here? Chances?

I'm currently a history major at the U of Miami looking into Middlebury as a Spring transfer in 06. I would be transferring in as a Junior hopefully, since I have over 60 credits with my AA. I'm National Honors Society and a psych club member with a pretty good GPA (3.8) in history, psych, and writing classes. What I'm a little worried about is my EC's and how much emphasis they place on your HS background... HS wasn't anything stellar for me due to family issues (divorce) that brough me down a bit with a 3.5'ish GPA, not many EC's, and a 1200 SAT. Basically I'm hoping my two and a half years at UM will rectify that :) Any advice for people in my situation?
Can great letters of recommendation and essays outweigh the HS record?

Any transfer advice would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks a lot.

Middlebury accepts very few transfer students each year (I believe last year they accepted 6 total). I don't know how much high school figures into things, but I know they'd be understanding if you explained the extenuating circumstances that occured during high school. In the general application process, the quality of your writing, recommendations, grades, classes taken and stats are the important factors in the decision.
