Hi there, I’m currently a high school senior, a month away from graduation and I plan on going to local community college. I plan on doing my 2 years and transferring to a UC later on. I’m still undecided, major-wise and UC-wise. Unofficially, for major, I’m thinking journalism, communications, or political science. Either way, I’d like to get started early and make sure I am able to be a well-rounded student for when it comes time to apply, in terms of not only academics, but also extracurriculars. Does anyone have any tips for a prospective transfer student?
I would put academics by far over everything else. I only had one single EC on my app and managed to get into UCLA and UCSD, the UCs don’t care too much for ECs for transfer students. Though it would help joining a club related to your major, and doing some volunteering in a field related to your major aswell.
If you haven’t decided on a major yet, take some classes that’ll fulfill your IGETC requirement. This will allow you to take classes in order to find your major, while simultaneously helping you progress into eventually being able to transfer. You really wanna try to pick a major soon tho, that way you can transfer within two years. Your major prep is probably the most important thing for most UCs you apply to
btw I wasn’t trying to imply that ECs don’t matter at all. It seems that if one school cares about ECs, it’s Berkeley. I got rejected to Berkeley with a 4.0 and all my reqs done probably because of my lack of ECs. And looking on the waitlist thread, it looks like there are other 4.0s who got waitlisted due to lack of ECs.
