Any University that would suit me?

Im in my Junior Year of high school and i'm starting to look at Universities (Well... have been since Middle school) for preparation

SAT scores: 2250

Grades: All A's (except one B in Freshman Year)

Here are my classes so far:

Sophmore:

* During the school year I did a foreign exchange over to Germany (1 quarter) and South Korea (1 quarter). Instead of going on another care project, I did some local charity help for under the poverty line education and the homeless community.

AP english
Honors Pre-Cal
Spanish
AP Biology
AP government and politics

Started 3 local charities (1 for teenage mothers, 1 for children with mental disabilities under the age of 12, and 1 for a summer program for under privileged children who want a better education/better future)

I know 5 other languages other than english which include: Hebrew, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Korean and currently learning Japanese (all self-taught except Spanish)
Numerous state/national awards
Summer camp jobs with my sister (Didn't list them earlier because they aren't as important as the other ones)

I want to major in Psychology or Political Science.

If these matter:
Female/White/17
Income: 220,000+
First in family to go to college

I think the you look very good on paper and I would suggest applying to schools like Duke, Northwestern etc. This may sound strange, but the fact that you are a white female is likely to work against you. A black male with your stats would have a much easier time (I assume). Overall though, you have clearly worked very hard and should apply to any school you are interested in as I think you have a chance at any school you dedicate yourself to.

Chance me back:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1613053-chance-me-what-schools-would-be-reaches-matches-and-safties-for-me.html#latest</a></p>

To add on, this would be a good list of colleges for you:

Duke
Northwestern
Brown
Cornell
Penn State
NYU
And a state school (like U Michigan) for a safety.

University that would suit you? leavingNYC is dead on in terms of stats however I’m against people applying to every top university in the country like so many people do on here. My advice is to apply to places you would enjoy going to, for example if you want to be near a city then Cornell would be a terrible choice because it is in a more rural area. If you like Greek life the Dartmouth would be good. You see where I’m going with this?

Well academically you are within average for top universities, but dont just pick and choose off of USnews’ top list. Research and choose schools that would fit you both academically and socially.

My thread (chance please): <a href=“Chances for Vanderbilt, UNC, NYU, UF, and Duke? - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1610985-chances-for-vanderbilt-unc-nyu-uf-and-duke-p1.html</a>

Sorry man. I choose colleges mostly bc of prestige.

But you are good in terms of acedemics.

In terms of ec, do you have a leadership role? very important to colleges.
nevertheless, knowing that many languages is a plus.</p>

GL
I applied to 16 colleges bc i know the chances at each is very low, and the more you apply, the higher the chance you get into at least one reach.

I don’t know how good is Georgetown for psychology… but it should be on your list since pol-sci is something that interests you.

Try Berkeley at the match level, UIUC/McGill at the safety level.

Very good on paper. You could be a school drone though, hard to say. All of the Ivies are fair game for you as well as other top schools like Northwestern, Duke, etc.

You would be a competitive applicant pretty much anywhere.

Try for HYP, Columbia, Duke, Northeastern, Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Stanford.

Chance me back: <a href=“**Chance me for good and rising Northeast schools ** - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1612160-chance-me-for-good-and-rising-northeast-schools-p1.html</a></p>

I’m just wondering, should I retake my SAT to see if I could reach 2400? Or should I stay with 2250?

2250 is fine. You’ll need to take Subject Tests and score 750+ though.
Adcoms dislike “charity abroad” that isn’t linked to a charity at home so make sure your local volunteer work is well documented and ties in with your trips abroad.
Spending a semester/year abroad would be a nice way to stand out.
For your projected majors, AU, GWU, Georgetown, Tufts would be best. Also look into Occidental (UN internship program/selective but pretty unique) and Macalester.

With your admirable work in charity-related and human rights areas, plus international experience, I have to second Tufts as a great fit for you. Save the world-types, highly regarded Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, passionate IR community, just ranked 9th in Peace Corps volunteers over many higher-ranked schools.

Based on your stats as of now, it could be a low reach/ high match. Good luck!

(And don’t think last poster really read your profile. Suggested spending semester/ year abroad when your profile is brimming with time abroad! And to flatly state that adcoms “dislike ‘charity abroad’” unless it’s tied to something local is a pretty odd generalization. Passion is key, no matter where you put your effort and what group it “ties” into, stateside or elsewhere!)

@gondaline
I did read the profile. That’s why I said to make sure to tie the local charity experience with the charity experience abroad : yes, a one-time trip abroad “for charity” that parents paid for, is disliked - if the kid is genuine, they’ll wonder why it didn’t occur to them to volunteer in or near their community. OP is different thus will need to highlight that since it’s a definite way to stand out. Also, I didn’t suggest spending semester/year abroad, I responded approvingly to OP’s “* If I get the chance on a foreign exchange, I will most likely take it.”

Overall, though, I agree that passion is key and jasper has that. It’s much more important than getting 2300 on the SAT. :)

@jasper: Peace Corps rankings:
http://files.peacecorps.gov/multimedia/pdf/stats/schools2014.pdf</a></p>

But how good is Tufts in psychology? The OP considered psychology, too…

If you guys wouldn’t of mentioned Tufts I probably would of never looked into it, but I’m really glad you guys did. After researching about it, it will definitely be one of the colleges I apply to. Thanks for the input.

Catria, can’t speak for Tufts’ psychology programs, but here’s a site:

http://www.collegefactual.com/colleges/tufts-university/rankings/badges/program-psychology-top-ranked/</a></p>

And if OP is interested in child development specifically (as a sub-category of psychology, perhaps), Tufts again stands out with its Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development.

And to the point of all the travel in your CV, jasper911, as long as you find the consistent, common thread running through all, I don’t think there’s a need to obsess over whether too much is international vis-à-vis what you’ve done locally. And I won’t make the assumption that parents paid for your long-distance travel, since you didn’t note this. There are ways to “dance” around the matter so it shows your travel was a self-initiated passion for service or international learning, not a resume-padding filling up of summers, etc.

So glad you’re considering Tufts!

Just so you guys know, my parents didn’t pay for my travel. I did myself, through saving up since I was 13 and current jobs.

Bump

How did you take an AP English class in 10th grade? There are only 2 AP English classes (AP Lang and AP Lit) and I’m assuming you’re taking them 11th and 12th grade since you have AP English down for those as well
