Elvis, there has been a ton of stuff written about Penn State's musical theater programs on this list. Try looking at the big list at the top of this forum. (I believe that Boston's program also has been discussed, though not as much.) Though I do not have specific info on U of Maryland, I know that each year, several strong actors from my D's arts high school end up going there and speak very highly of the training and the performance opportunities.

I will ask my D's friend to make a post about Vassar. She is a student there, who was active in theatre in high school, and is now involved in the music dept there.

Much appreciated! I am mostly concerned with the level of acting training at these schools. Everything else is secondary, however, I would be inetersted in the vocal training. I believe schools should be more acting based like CMU, whether its MT or not, so that's the program I am looking for.

ive noticed all of your schools are in the northeast (or at least the one's i've heard of). maybe you are restricting you search to that area for a reason, but if you are open to other locations and are interested in a MT BFA with a very strong acting component, visit Webster in st. louis. you will not be disappointed.

Boston University is generally considered to have one of the better BFA Acting programs in the US. They're in the same "Consortium of Conservatory Theatre Training Programs" with CMU, NCSA, and SUNY Purchase. They're also in the same price range as CMU and NYU at around $50,000 per year. They don't have an MT major, though. I don't know exactly what their admit rate is or the size of their BFA class, but they should be considered highly selective. They sometimes recommened BFA students to the BA program and vice versa at the end of freshman year though they don't have a cut system per se.

For a BA program, I understand Vassar to have a really good faculty and amazing facilities. They have a very active undergraduate theatre scene for both majors and non-majors and lots of on-camera opportunities through their film department as well. It's a VERY good BA to use as a springboard to the top MFA programs and professional training studios. I think their music and dance programs are supposed to also be very good.

hi there -- i go to vassar college. i'm ali.
the theatre is really wonderful here. we have several student run theatre groups, including a newfly founded musical theatre group that just performed a really fun version of thoroughly modern millie. We have a shakespeare troup, and two wonderful student run groups (Philaletheis and another that i can't remember because they're a bit smaller), and a student run theatre (the Shiva blackbox theatre). The drama department can be a bit cliquey, but they also do really wonderful performances. They do a musical every other year, which is why the musical theatre group (FWA - future waitstaff of america) was founded. I know FWA is putting on two musicals in the fall semester, though I don't know if they have chosen them yet. The department shows are pretty competitive. This year their musical was into the woods, but a more experimental version. I loved this version of it (that show drives me a little crazy after being in it, but this was a great production).

Um..what else. We have improv groups if you're into that. We literally have a little of everything, and a lot of most things.

I'm much more involved in the music department here. I did a little bit of tech last year, but I really gravitated towards music. I like the program better. I take voice lessons, which are competitive but really amazing, and I am also a part of the Women's Chorus, which is one of my favourite parts of Vassar.

Vassar is NOT a conservatory, so you will be taking classes in other departments. We have essentially no core curriculum (you are required to take a freshman writing class, be proficient in a language, and take a quantitative analysis class), but 25% of your credits must come from other departments besides your major. Vassar really gives you the freedom to learn what you want, though most students do a bit of everything.

If you have any other questions, feel free to email me -- alross@vassar.edu. I'm happy to answer any other questions!

I'm not very familiar with the schools you asked about, but in addition to some of the schools that others have recommended to you above, I think you would like Ithaca with its acting based MT program.
