Anyone else gearing up to apply for 2020-21?

I seem to remember that some of the schools will drop their applications and audition dates around August 1st, when the Common App opens.

Elon has a prescreening now. You need to submit them and I think they invite you to audition. It was 2 years ago so I’m not certain. You could double major with their BFA. It would be very difficult to double major at NYU. They have a 3 year program and that includes the summers. The schedule makes it very difficult to logistically add another major. Not certain about the other schools, so really ask if it is important to your daughter. A double major is difficult for my daughter and she is getting a BFA at Rutgers Mason/Gross. She is going to attempt a minor.

Thank you! Yes, forgot she also has Rutgers on her list…

Yep, and already had three fight with my parents about it. I’m applying to most of the UCs plus Brown.

@NavigatingMom… What school did your daughter choose for fall 2019?

I asked this in last years group, I believe, but I’m gonna be a broken record- does anyone know of any programs that are more accepting of body diversity? I’ve heard of the programs where my daughter would be laughed out the door (figuratively- she’d never actually get offered an audition) for her body type, but surely there must be some that don’t solely focus on girls who are super slim?

@milgymfam what kind of program is your daughter looking for - ballet, modern, a combo of different types of dance? Edited to add I found the prior conversation and remember now what you were asking. Have you made any progress on auditions or narrowing down programs to audition for?

@mom2adancer I haven’t made progress- I can’t even find the old thread. Ha. We are visiting CA in September, as that is where she wants to attend school but I have no leads for her on programs. It seems like every single dance program I’ve found someone has told me to steer clear of. It’s disheartening and frustrating for sure.

I would not live and die by what other people say about programs. Of course if you have a connection to a program you will feel strongly about it and and some people tend to look down on programs other than their own. I have found that finding the place that feels right is very personal to the dancer. I would suggest following some programs you are interested in on social media. This will allow you to get an idea of what their dancers look like, their skill level and a general feel for the program. It’s a great place to start.

Great advice above! Schools in CA to possibly consider with dance majors: UCI and UCSB (pricey though if you’re out of state), Chapman, Loyola Marymount, Cal State Long Beach.

We have looked at all of those. Out of state tuition isn’t an issue as she’ll use GI bill, but I don’t believe she’s academically eligible for any California public schools- she’s an out of state homeschooler so I think that means she doesn’t meet A-G requirements at all. As far as I’ve researched, there aren’t programs with dancers that look like my D, but there are levels. It’s more, right now, word of mouth as to who will just give her an earnest look at audition- no one has really bad mouthed programs to us as much as said they’re not for her. Chapman and LM are on her list based on research into academics, etc. so I guess I will start there and see if they’ll even accept her to audition- Chapman at least has prescreening, I think. I’m trying to gently nudge her to let it go and attend a school with no audition or even no dance program, and just join a studio, but she’s rightly pulling against paying for a large amount of studio hours. Anyway, thanks!

Is she open to a dance minor? That might open up possibilities.
Here are a few more non-UC and non-CSU options.

That is basically her list for non-audition! Ha! Thank you!!

Mills has a non-audition major though the rest are minors. It’ll be a huge step down in training but it’s better than nothing!

If CA is her #1 criteria but UC/CSU schools don’t seem viable then her list will be somewhat limited. I hope she finds some choices to feel excited about!

@milgymfam check Goucher, Muhlenburg for low key “auditions” for lack of a better word. James Madison has a nice BA dance major.

@amom2girls thank you. The east coast hasn’t been kind to her autoimmune conditions and she really wants to go back west (we lived in CA for 5 years). Whether that tops wanting to dance? Probably but I’m not 100% sure.

How sure are you that she isn’t meeting the a-g requirements for CA schools?

@mom2adancer I am about 100% sure. She was only homeschooled for an accredited program for 9th/10th. This year we ditched them because they were charging a lot more than we could afford just for that stamp of approval- they didn’t actually do or teach anything. So she basically has no 11th grade courses as far as CA is concerned- she did take ASL DE, so I guess she has one course? All of her senior year courses will be DE, but that doesn’t change anything really. The only way for traditional homeschoolers to meet A-G requirements is through SAT II and AP testing, none of which she’s done or will do.

CA public colleges come off as particularly homeschool UNfriendly in our experience. My D19 had no problem applying to state schools in OH and PA with her mom-made transcript, nor any issues at her private colleges.

Has she thought about a community college in CA that’s near great training for dancers her age? Could be a possible path…
