I attend College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, an extremely small (300 student) school with a focus of Human Ecology. We have a trimester system though, and so we have an insanely long winter break(Nov 16th-Jan 6th). When I tell my friends here at home in NYC that I miss college they look at me like I'm crazy. I really miss it though! The community, the food, the workload, even my dormroom and all that mess. Does anyone else have a long break and miss their college?

I have to say, I didn't think I'd ever be this attached to something so stressful as academics.

I am not on break yet as we are on the semester system and have about another week and a half to go, but one of my good friends, actually one your your friends , M. misses it alot and can't wait to go back. I was just talking to her and she said she can't wait to see some of her COA friends int eh city.

I obviously want to see many old high school friends over break, but after like 2 weeks or so it'll definitely get boring, especially since there is absolutely no work to do in between semesters even if you wanted to get a "head start".

I always "miss" school when I'm home. That's where my life is! Sure it's nice to see my old friends and sit around without any work to do, but most of what's important to me is at school. This is especially true because I go to school in a big city where I intend to stay for a while, it's more where I LIVE, not where I just go to school.

I LOVED being home for breaks, and I hated going back to homework and exams, but I always missed my college when I was away from it. Now I'm graduated, I thought I'd be grateful to be "free," and oh my goodness...send me back (no, I'm not even in the "real world" yet, and won't be for a number of years) :p

It always baffled me, too, when I'd go home and mention missing campus and find out that that was weird. So many people, even smart kids at other good schools, were just trying to get through, anxious to get home to their "real" friends, anxious to get away from nasty dining hall food, grateful to finally have "stuff to do"...made me feel pretty lucky, because most of my college friends--even those who, like myself, enjoyed being home--felt similarly to me.

I missed school all the time when I was on breaks. And as I got older and lost track of some of my HS friends, breaks became more and more boring, and when I finally stopped living in the fraternity house and had my own place that I could go to while school wasn't in session, I really began to cut down on the amount of time I spent at home.

I definitely hated going home when I was living in the dorms and they kicked us out. I only talk to about 3 friends from high school still, so it was incredibly boring, and would be even more boring now since my mom just moved into my grandma's house in the middle of nowhere with no cell phone service and no internet.

I have my own apartment now, and I will be staying in town until Christmas Eve and coming back on the 26th. I don't really miss my family, because I go home for a day (usually Sundays) once a month or 6 weeks-ish to have family dinners. I live about an hour away from my college, so it's not that bad to go home when I need to and come back when I want to. Plus, I have a good friend who is coming back to my college's town over break because she goes to grad school in Minnesota and her family lives here, and I'm excited to see her.

I missed school when I spent two days with my family over Thanksgiving (I spent the first three days with my boyfriend's family). I don't know what I'll do with myself for an entire month, especially since I went to high school in a different city from the one my parents live in now and won't be able to see my friends. :(

I can't stand going home, I love being at school. The friends, the work (yes, the schoolwork!), everything being so close (food, etc), independence.

When I go back home, my friends aren't a 2 minute walk away. My mom demands that I tell her where I'm going, how late I'll be out, who will be there, to call if I'll be late, etc. I mean I can understand where she's coming from; it's just that I can't stand being free at college and then going home to that. At home, I feel unproductive, and then when I'm trying to do something (be it important or just relaxing) I'll be interrupted very often by my family or cousins or aunts or uncles to do some trivial errand.
I don't know, I just like being able to work on my own schedule like when I am at school.

I'm not on break yet but I'm totally not looking forward to having to be home for a month! I'll miss school like crazy.

DannyLS3 - I have a friend that's a freshman at COA and another one that's transferring in for second semester. Pretty cool considering it's so small. It seems like an awesome place.

DefyingGravity-Oh yeah, M and me talk all the time, she's even more excited to go back than me :P

PeaceOut-That's really cool, I'm confident I know the entire freshman class so I probably know your friend too. Since you're from CO, does her name start with a K?
