Anyone fall in love with a campus at first sight?

Here's the picture of every Indian campus: tons of buildings, a road weaving through them, and a whole bunch of students walking, talking and studying.

OK, I'm evil :D

Okay, one last post tonight:

Here are some pictures of my local university (University of California at Santa Cruz). As you can tell by the pictures, it is located in a redwood forest on a hill above the Monterey Bay (Pacific Ocean) in northern California about an hour's drive south of San Francisco.

<a href="http://www.cooperrobertson.com/scripts/window.php?file=../images/urban/ucscCl.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://www.cooperrobertson.com/scripts/window.php?file=../images/urban/ucscCl.jpg</a></p>

<a href="http://www.cooperrobertson.com/scripts/window.php?file=../images/urban/ucscAl.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://www.cooperrobertson.com/scripts/window.php?file=../images/urban/ucscAl.jpg</a></p>

The college (in the first picture) is in the southwest portion of the second picture.

<a href="http://www.ucsc.edu/about/gallery/kresge.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.ucsc.edu/about/gallery/kresge.asp</a></p>

These pictures are from the firm which is helping them with their Master Plan. Strangely enough, I notice the same firm is doing work for Harvard, Yale, Duke, Columbia, John Hopkins, Fordham, and Trinity, among other college campuses.

Nice greenery, Calcruzer!

I loved Boston College the moment I stepped onto the campus. It looked like college should to me with the Gothic architecture, etc. Of course it was a beautiful fall day in New England, but even now with the nor'easters and other weather events, it is still the best. I had visited a ton of other colleges by that point, but knew it was the right place for me. So yes, I respect the feeling of "the one"

Go Patriots!

Calcruzer - I've heard SUNY Albany is fugly...

"because of their lack of sustained visual achievement....."

Hmmm...not sure I understand what Thomas Gaines meant by that.

Anyone have nice BU pictures? I've searched online and there aren't many pictures of BU...

I think you have to be careful about picking a school based on the looks of the school. I picked a school based on looks and it turned out not to be the right choice for me at all.

Our S tried, tried, tried not to fall in love, because he knew so much would depend on finances.

So he denied he was in love, denied it to himself and to us. He was fortunate that he was accepted at the Love school and to others that were good fits in every objective way.

I went with him the the various accepted student programs. It was obvious to me that he was in "love" (moms always know :)); he was relaxed and happy there. And when I asked about his feelings during its program he said, "I don't know, I just feel so comfortable here."

Sophomore year now. It has not been all sweetness and light, because his academic program has been so demanding, but he can't imagine being anywhere else.

Mafool - similar experience with DD. Visited a lot of colleges summer between sophomore & junior year and the last stop was Yale. She almost started shaking in the car - sorta like a Lab when they smell water. She tried not to make a big deal out of it because the odds were against it.

Re-visited several places between junior/senior year. Same reaction. Said she was hoping by then she would be less impressed. Went on several admitted student days and the weather was glorious at a couple and horrible at Y. Didn't matter. She was in her element.

She is now a freshman there and has never been happier in her life. Once again, there have been stressful moments, but she still loves it.

D fell in love with Pepperdine was accepted and still loves it. H and I went yesterdayto visit her and had to stop to take more pics. Spent the night in downtown L.A. and our room overlooked USC....no comparison...brick and mortar ugly. Pepperdine is just beautiful!

Gaines must of meant U of Rochester, not RIT.

I'm not so sure. Both places have their own type of charm--and I'm not one to second-guess what someone else wrote.

I'll let people judge for themselves.

Pictures of RIT:

Pictures of University of Rochester:

As far as which campus to go to, I'm not one to recommend a school just based upon looks--especially since what one prefers varies so much from person to person. My own son loves USC's look--while JC* above prefers Pepperdine. I like both campus' looks (I don't find USC ugly at all), but as already stated, I prefer Pepperdine it we're judging a school based just on the beauty of the buildings and landscaping.

Oberlin has a nice campus as well

When my son had narrowed his choice down to the final three, UCB, UCLA, UCSD, we visited them all. He had always said that Berkeley was his first choice, but he was willing to look at the other two. We toured UCLA and his choice was made. It was his school in every way. It is a beautiful school, but it just had that extra something for him.

Not sure if I'm going to go there, but I gotta say that the University of Washington (at least parts) is drop-dead gorgeous.

It is perfectly normal. Usually the actual visit can be the most compelling to the student, it is what helps them make their ultimate decision.

Indiana Unviversity = most beautiful campus in the country

I caution any priority be given to appearances as most colleges concentrate on impressing students with such. They are more interested in attracting students with "stuff" rather than the purpose of getting educated. Ohio State boasts of their 140-million dollar sports complex so that you can kiack indoors. Boston Univ issued a press release announcing the new addition of a wave machine to their 4-million dollar Olympic pool. The Univ of Wisconsin at Madison announced their addition of a message parlor on campus "to relieve stress." I'm not making this up. Colleges are marketing organizations interested in selling impressionable young minds with fluff instead of real substance. And this reality is darkened by the colleges' expectation that you will be happy to pay their confiscatory increases every year. Be careful where you place your priorities.

Excess stress can be very bad for academic performance. UW is also finally getting a decent on campus coffee shop--Peet's. Good stuff.
