Anyone feel like they got dumber since starting college?

I feel like it's just me, but in high school, the one reason I was completely on top of things was because I could listen/read something once and remember it perfectly. I can't do it as well anymore, and it's not because the material is more difficult (because it hasn't been -__-).

Anything like this happen to anyone else?

Well contrary to that, I just feel like it’s easier for us to shine in HS… you can just remember 1/4 of the course material ands still do well since you have little to no competition… At Berkeley, everyone is your competitor… thus encouraging this cycle of endless cramming… Even if you know 4/4 of your course material, somewhere out there, there will be someone who has mastered above that 4/4 lol!

I don’t think you are getting dumber… just people around you are just very competitive/excelling versus HS where people slack off and don’t care…

How are you doing in econ1 so far :P?

Cut back on the sex, pot smoking, and booze if you do any/all of them, it seems to help students improve their scores.

^haha yeah, none of that xP

I know what you mean, but it’s not the grade, really, it’s just my ability to retain information haha Like things just fly right by me in lecture more often than they should (things that I would have been able to remember, like, say, simple definitions of words, or even the equations we’re doing in econ now!).

@pixel: Econ 1. rant alert…man…I could have gotten a 94 on the midterm, but wrote 4q instead of 40q for the TR curve (recopied the demand curve wrong), so ended up with a 77 T___T all my answers were off by a factor of 10 (one.flipping.zero.), and lost almost 20 pts ; A; idk if I should ask for a regrade, since my parents were like it was my mistake to screw up on the first step…guess it’s a B for me hahaha /cry end rant

I saw you’re probably getting an A? nice! :)

Well I got a B- on my first mt so I’m not sure if I can still ace the class if I manage to ace my final (and yup I got an A for the 2nd MT; lost some pts b/c of algebraic mistake :(…). How did you do on your first mt? I assume pretty well?

I’m sure you can still pull an A if you ace that final + extra credits… Econ1 is so disorganized though :(… I’m not sure how they’ll grade lol…

It’s called getting old. (The not-remembering-anything part).

^ Well that’s depressing. So berkeley’s taken 10 years off my brain then? -__-

@pixel Nahhh…B+…all stupid algebra mistakes though >:K That’s what I hate about this…there’s no real reason not to get an A, but here I am (we are lol). I really should have just dropped the class. Olney’s teaching next sem too D:

Haha I wish! too bad everything’s based on a curve! And Delong needs to put some clicker questions in now since people aren’t coming to lecture as much. Good luck to the both of us!! And yes about the disorganized comment. It worked out in our favor though, eh? No 10th problem set and 3rd essay?

^Lol that’s true about the 3rd essay/10th problem set. And definitely, the exams are really fair since he doesn’t bring in random crap we haven’t learned. But I think we screw up over minor mistakes (which hit me so hard on the 1st mt :().

So true…I’m so bitter about the -17 from missing a 0 on all my answers…

Ye that sucks :(… at least he didn’t subtract all 40… that would have been brutal for you :(…

lol yeah I guess =____=

I took Multivariable calculus in high school with the same textbook as Math 53. I took Math 53 again in Berkeley, and I still remember copying my own homework that I did 2 years ago b/c I had no idea what was going on in the class.

I definitely feel I got dumber.

^ legit. +1

if you can find some way to sleep at 11am and wake up at 7am everyday, you’ll find urself returning to your high school self in no time(means being smarter again). the only drawback is u might feel ur life become a bit duller

it’s definitely the lack of sleep that seems to come with college, regardless of your major or classes…

i decided to forcibly correct my terrible sleeping schedule and started sleeping at 12 and waking up at 7 every day.

now i just have zero motivation. at least back when i didn’t sleep i stayed on top of things… now i just don’t do anything. ■■■.

I can’t write essays anymore. Used to be a good writer back in high school, but lost it here since I’ve switched over to the sciences. Definitely got dumber.

ahhh friends 8’D

hahaha yeah…I tried to sleep at 11 once…got kept awake until 4 anyway --. Tried to sleep at 1 last night. Kept awake until 5. I wake up at 6:30 and take no naps. Roomie sleeps through morning classes (until 1/2) and naps at night during my dinner time. ==

Seriously though, whoever came up with the education system must have been on crack. Just saying.

I don’t have much class this semester (woo graduating!) but I have a weekly 8am meeting with my thesis advisor. I’ve been sleeping after 2am and waking up at noon every day so waking up for this meeting is the thing I dread most in my life right now.
