Well now that ChoatieKid is a senior and done with final move-in, I’ll share a secret with all you new Choate families who’ve had GMT’s experience at the local WalMart, Target, etc. – the Sears Appliance store just up the road from WalMart (and kinda hidden from view by the trees) is an undiscovered gem and still has fans and other room furnishings long after the other stores are sold out. We picked up two large window box fans for $17.99 each. CK also picked up some not-exactly-sanctioned items at great prices with better selection than the usual suspects.

Inside S2’s dorm we saw the discarded cardboard boxes of some not-exactly-sanctioned items…heh heh

Huh? Give me a hint about what kind of items you are referring to!

Fridge

I have heard that some kids receive a medical waiver to have a fridge in their room to store temperature-sensitive prescription medication. Seems like a stretch to me…

Kids at D2’s school are allowed to have mini fridges.

Seems some kids have enough “items” to whip up some pretty fine meals and keep their room temperature quite pleasant throughout the year. Just sayin’

Since colleges both return to school and get out earlier, and there are so many of them, and they are bigger…it makes sense that they empty out the Targets, BBBs etc.
You’d have to shop earlier or order online and have items delivered. Our 5th former is a shopper and did just this buying a lot online and having it delivered right to school.

Having stuff delivered to school seems the best. How far advance do schools accept packages? Is 3 weeks too early?
We rented a full size SUV and it was filled with stuff to the ceiling thanks to last minute purchases at Staples. We were afraid of opening windows as things may start to fall out. While driving we joked about one of the doors accidentally opening and scattering mattress topper and pillows, etc on the streets.

The move in day was very hot and muggy. I ran to get a fan but it was sold out at local stores. I drove 20 minutes to a hardware store to get one. ;(

You discovered the scavenger hunt secret. Well done!

She started having stuff delivered to school at least 3 weeks before start date and the mail room just held them.

It’s not close to September, but thought this topic deserves a bump. I was looking to ask a question about drop off expectations (which this doesn’t cover), but there are a lot of good getting ready tips. Yes, it’s May, but I appreciate having the info so when we start getting ready, we make fewer mistakes. Finishing the panoply of forms and so have fall drop off on my mind. Off to order some adhesive labels…
