Anyone from NYU-Steinhardt? Advice on preparing for music therapy audition?

Hello everyone,

I expect to graduate next spring with a BA in psychology with honors and completed minors in music and German. I'm hoping to pursue graduate study in music therapy and I'd really appreciate some advice. Here's some background info:

I've been playing guitar and piano by ear for about 11 years now and have only recently started learning them classically. I also sing, but always by ear; I've never read vocal music before but I can harmonize with others fairly easily. I know all of the basics of theory and sight-reading, but I'm generally much better with my ear most of the time. (Sometimes, my ear takes over for me if I'm trying to read a sheet for a song that I'm already familiar with.) Being that most of my musical experience relies heavily on my ear, I'd like to spend most of my free time between now and graduation day practicing theory, sight reading, and preparing for my auditions in general. I would really appreciate it if anyone could provide useful resources for me to practice with and/or suggestions for preparing for the auditions.

I'd especially appreciate advice you could give me specifically for NYU-Steinhardt's grad program. I'm really interested in suggestions for NYU because their audition section of the website (<a href="http://steinhardt.ny...rapy/auditions/">http://steinhardt.ny...rapy/auditions/</a>) does not list any specific audition requirements, or recommended songs/styles, so I'm kind of lost trying to figure out how I should prepare. I'd appreciate any non-NYU audition advice too though!

I'm also planning to apply at University of the Pacific and Immaculata, so I tried to figure out good criteria for an audition based on those schools' listed criteria, but what I found was that they're actually drastically different! Here are the audition requirements for the other two schools:

University of the Pacific:

-two contrasting pieces on your principal musical instrument
-sing two pieces from traditional or contemporary musical styles and accompany yourself with piano and/or guitar, sheet music/lead sheets allowed.
-sing an American folk song from memory unaccompanied

Immaculata:

-two pieces from "classical" repertoire on major instrument. accompaniment preferred, when needed, but memorization is not necessary.
-present skills on guitar and piano by accompanying yourself while singing five songs (3 with piano, 2 with guitar, or vice versa) in a range of styles. Songs can include children's repertoire, "popular" repertoire, songs you have composed, etc.

The only things that NYU has listed for their audition prerequisites are:
Musical Foundations
Technical competence on piano, guitar, and voice
Flexibility of style on these instruments
Ability to improvise
Music Theory

How do you think I should I go about preparing for this audition?

Do you have any suggestions on preparing for auditions in general? Good pieces to play? Music theory or sight-reading practice, etc?

Do you have personal experience at NYU, or University of the Pacific or Immaculata? How did your audition(s) go? What pieces did you play?

Thank you in advance for your replies! :)

I think if you repost this in the music major forum you will receive more replies and advice.
