What's it like to be a missionary?

Whitties are so busy that very few frequent these boards; you might do better to look at the Ask a Student section on the Whitman website where you can email students directly.

second that. anything specific you want us to ask our kids there?

We make jokes about the name all the time, and there’s a movement that wants to change it to the Whitman Ducks/Geese/Other Bird. I like it, though, it’s pretty unique.

I’ve also heard that people want to change it to the Sweets (as in the sweet onions), which is our ultimate frisbee team mascot.

I wasn’t talking about the mascot specifically…
I was talking about the studying environment, professors, academics, etc…

I’ll be attending in the spring. I’ve transferred twice so I have a lot of colleges to compare it to and Whitman has the friendliest environment I have encountered at any school. The staff was extremely helpful, the campus is beautiful, the location is great (i prefer small towns), and the gym is AMAZING

This is currently my second semester at Whitman and in general, it is a really great place for me to be, both academically and personally. I am really involved in the music program here and, while it is relatively small, it is very close-knit as a result of this and I’ve met a lot of awesome people through music.

As with any college, each professor has his or her own reputation, which may or may not be true. I have had at least three or four really exceptional, talented, and smart professors here; all the others have been good, too.

Whitman is a very strong school academically, however the overall attitude on campus is not one of competitiveness, but rather of academic collaboration. The professors I’ve had have been very helpful in terms of holding lots of office hours, helping me understand difficult concepts, and just being good people in general.

Even though Whitman is such a small school, it is still able to offer a range of relatively specialized classes such as “Women as Composers”. I think there is also a class offered this coming semester about the Salem witch trials, and one called “History and Sociology of Rock and Roll” is always a favorite. It can be hard to get into classes like these as a freshman or even a sophomore, but dropping an email to express your interest to the professor before registration has always been very helpful for me.

Freshman here are required to take an intro humanities class called “Encounters” (formerly “Antiquity and Modernity”). You can probably find some less subjective info on the school website, of course … but I can tell you that the level of enjoyment people get out of this class really depends on the professor one has.

And on a more superficial level, Whitman’s campus is just gorgeous, and the food is actually pretty good. Feel free to send me a message if you have any more questions.

Also feel free to pm me as well. I am a current sophomore at Whitman.
