Anyone had success getting Carfax to correct an error?

We recently discovered an error on the Carfax report for a vehicle we own as we are about to sell/trade it in. The report indicates that an accident we had 10 years ago resulted in our car being totaled. It was no where close to being totaled. We have a clean title to the car etc. It appears the only way to contact Carfax is via their messaging system. The process has been very slow and unproductive at this point. Any pointers? How would they have even gotten such information?

Perhaps try contacting the shop who repaired it. From my understanding of Carfax, auto shops do the entries on cars. And, there are unethical shops that don’t enter their work, or make misleading entries. We have learned through purchasing used cars for our kids that Carfax is not the reliable report it makes itself out to be. But yes…it can still hurt you at trade in or sale, so try the people who repaired it, since (I believe) they would have made that entry. Hopefully you have a good relationship with that shop.

Thanks for the tip. Will pursue this avenue. It is a very reputable shop still in business. Our insurance company doesn’t have any records going back 10 years. Wonder if the shop will have records that far back. Worth a try. It is such an obvious error that we figured Carfax could fix it based on the logic and documentation we submitted. But we are totally at their mercy, apparently. Thanks so much.

Does Carfax have a FaceBook page or other social media presence? Try typing a generic question about mistakes, and asking for a number to call or person to contact. Most companies don’t like poor public reviews, so answer much more quickly. If they have a ‘chat’ function, you can also try that.
