Campus is amazing with gorgeous architecture and beautiful scenery. I would classify it as more of a nature campus. Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business has been ranked number 1 in the country the last two years by Businessweek. Sorry, I don’t know much about the marketing program though.

Golf308 - a good number of students have jobs on campus that aren’t on financial aid, in fact I have a campus job and don’t get aid…it really depends on the job, but most are around the minimum wage (which is about 7.25 an hour). I know that some places pay more for higher positions/tenure (i.e. at Reckers you get paid more for being a manager and everyone gets a small pay raise for each semester they have worked there).

In terms of not spending too much money, the best way is to use your flex points smartly. For my first three semesters I saved them well and spent very little while at ND. Last semester I didn’t do a great job and spent about 100 dollars at Reckers over the last couple of weeks. Also, be aware that most off campus parties are about 5 dollars to get in to help cover and dorm parties will usually ask for some money to help too.

But for me at least, I don’t know of any places where I have to spend a lot of money on campus.

Hi! I had a question. Is it mandatory to take math/language placement exams to see what classes I get into, there? or is that just for people who want to be in more advanced math and language classes?

just for people who want to be in more advanced math and language classes.

When will we have access to our schedules?

When do we apply for work study jobs? I was already awarded one in my FA, if that makes a difference.

I believe that I got my schedule on August 1st if I remember correctly. They come out right at the beginning of August. However, you don’t get to make any changes to them until you get to ND for orientation. But at least you are able to buy your books (from potential other sources than the ND bookstore) and such before you get to ND.

And for the work study jobs, I believe you have do that on your own. I know for some jobs, they publish some ads in the Observer and under the student life tab on inside.nd.edu there is a job board icon you can use. But I believe that all the work studies are independent of each other and therefore all have different requirements.

For the people thinking about work study/working on campus, check out the job board right now at: [Job Board Index : Office of Student Financial Services : University of Notre Dame](http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/jobboard/)

I advise you to at least take a look at it now to get a feel for what kind of jobs there are on campus. There are a lot of jobs around campus not on that website but this should give you a heads up of what at least is out there. Also, if anyone is interested in working a job that pays more or less $50 a week if you work regularly I can get you connected with that. I would advertise it openly if not for the fact that I will only be able to take a few students, so PM me now/closer to the school year if you are interested and I’ll give you some details.

Does being Catholic give you better chances?!?!?

Hehe, funny joke… right?

No I’m serious does it?

No, they don’t discriminate positively or negatively based upon religion.

But it’s a catholic school!!!

It is a Catholic school. There are many Catholic students, but there are students of all major religions (and no religion) there as well. The administration does not discriminate.

Hawkswim, thanks again for hosting this thread. Can anyone tell me how warm (or not) the dorms get in winter? I know the temperatures in the dorms probably vary depending on age of the dorm but is my daughter going to need anything more than a blanket and regular comforter? Also, when does it really start to get chilly there? We are going to visit in late October for the Navy game. Can my daughter wait for her cold weather gear till then? One last question: do kids find their own printers useful or does the university cover some/all printing costs, making a printer unnecessary? Thanks in advance. Best wishes to all you new freshmen!

This might be a little random, but for the swim test what type of bathing suit do girls usually wear? Are they mostly 1 peices or 2 peices? All I have are bikinis and those aren’t really great for actually swimming (wardrobe malfunctions anyone? haha)

rckpgh,
My son is in an older dorm and the heating works exceedingly well. One year, he and his roommates kept the window open much of the winter because it was too hot. He brought his comforter home. The fall weather can vary from one year to the next, but if your daughter has a fleece jacket that will probably do her until you come for the Navy game. And my son did have a printer, which is especially useful for procrastinators.

rckpgh,

As claremarie stated, i haven’t found heating to be a major issue. With a blanket and a comforter, you shouldn’t have any problems.

However, I would say that your daughter should bring as much cold weather gear as possible, i.e. don’t pack another bag that you have to pay for or anything, but if you can manage some extra room in your bags or if you are driving, I would say bring it. Normally it can become cold in the middle of October. The weather is really variable so you never know. I remember one of my years, it was cold in October and when my parents came in November it was a beautiful day. So it really does vary.

Each student gets 100 dollars in print quota which translates to 1000 pages. But remember, that students normally print double sided and lecture notes can be printed 2 or 6 to a side which means you really can print up to 12 slides with just one piece of paper. That being said, the printers find a great way to fail when you need them or during finals so I suggest buying a rather cheap printer that works and only buying one ink cartridge. Use your print quota when the printers work/until you run out and then use your printer.

Hope this helps!

princetongirl93,

If i remember correctly, I believe most girls will wear a 1 piece and I think it was actually suggested in class to wear a one piece (I wasn’t really paying attention when they said it as it didn’t pertain to me). But I would definitely recommend a 1 piece…it may be an investment in avoiding a potential embarrassing moment in your first week! - so it is probably worth it!

Silly question, but do the room sinks in Duncan have an Insta-hot attached? If you can’t have coffee pots in your room, do you have to go down to the kitchen to make a hot drink?
