Hi,

I am an incoming Cornell freshman in College of Engineering, planning to major in CS. I really hope to get placed out of MATH 1920.

The problem is I have no idea what Math CASE look like, and I could really use some help here.

I read from the brochure that there's only one sitting for math. I am wondering if I could choose to take section for 1910 or 1920, or stuff from both courses are mixed in one single large paper we're all expected to finish, cuz I took Calc BC in junior year and have forgotten much, and I wonder if I need to review single var calculus for the exam should it appear.

I sent Cornell an email and their response was rather ambivalent. So I really hope current Cornellians could give me some help.

Thank you.

It is straightforward.

Well, could you tell me if I get to choose which part I take or not? Cuz if I won’t, I definitely should review single variable calculus. It’s been more than a year…

How can you expect to pass the exam for 1920 without remembering your single-variable calc that well? Go study both if you want to pass…

When you signed up for courses last year did you enroll in Math 1920, or assume you were going to pass and enrolled in a higher level math class?

^uh I actually took multi at a college and did diff eq/lin alg over the summer before freshman year, so I got to place out. But, a couple of my friends who did take the case showed me their exam. (they also chose to enroll in classes with the assumption they were going to pass the test).

Oh okay, thanks for the feedback!

@Heavenfox - I was under the impression if you already have BC credit there is no reason to take the math 1910 CASE. I think you just take the math 1920 CASE (if you want to skip out of mvc for engineers), although I’m not sure on the particulars of your situation.

Thank you for your reply.

I actually got 5 on Calc BC in junior year, and took Linear Algebra that summer in a college, so I think if I can get placed out of 1920 and get transfer credit, the only math I’m required to take is some sort of probability (to substitute phys 2214 and fulfill major requirement), being a cs major.

I just wanna make sure if I can sit for math 1920 only, to determine my schedule over this summer. I just want to pass the test too desperately :)

I don’t recommend placing out of Linear Algebra, unless you took it at a college where the level of rigor is equivalent to that of Cornell’s engineering.

I took MATH 51, Linear Algebra and Differential Multivar Calculus at Stanford University, where I obtained an A+
