Anyone interested in helping me cut some schools by pm to apply to?

I'd post them publicly but I want to remain somewhat private. My son requested transcripts from his highschool for every school on his list and they were shocked by how many. Granted, we are in the Midwest and people typically only apply to maybe 2 or 3 schools at the most. It just got me thinking that cutting a few might be beneficial financially.

How many does he want to apply for, and how many live auditions would that be, if he passed all the pre-screens?
here’s an older thread on the subject: <a href=“How many music auditions did you do? - Music Major - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/930535-how-many-music-auditions-did-you-do.html</a></p>

I think it is 12. 4 being within 5 hours. 2 of those require prescreens. The ones I’m waffling on and we haven’t been able to visit would be Depauw and mcduffie string institute and university of Miami frost. Merit aid is absolutely a big factor in our decision. We thought mcduffie might work because he’s applying to fsu and it’s not that far away for auditions. And we plan on moving to Florida this summer and if he got into either it would be easier for us.

University of Miami has offered students on this forum some significant merit awards in the past, including a full ride. But 12 seems at the high end for auditions, unless it’s for flute. It’s interesting that so few require pre-screens for cello. Would he be thrilled to attend all twelve schools?

Have you reviewed the audition dates for all twelve schools? Is it even physically possible to schedule the twelve auditions - in terms of dates? Many audition weekends are the same days from one school to another.

I noticed that. People talk about combining auditions. Is that even possible? University of indiana doesn’t require a prescreen and neither does ccm. 2 lesser known programs are requiring prescreens

He’s be thrilled at 3 or 4 and the others are a step down from thrilled but still good

ok. I have an audition schedule. I can fit one in December thats close. Otherwise, wow…awful. He could potentially be gone every week from mid January till March. Are schools flexible at all on auditions? I can potentially combine university of illinois with CCM because one is on one day and the other is on both. How does that work? Do they allow you to make a request for which day?

And how on earth do your kids keep up with school if they are gone every week for 2 or 3 months…ouch. And how did you afford it? We have some saved. But wow. And are late auditions in March frowned upon??

And its down to 9 with one scheduled in December, one local, and 2 a few hours away. So that would leave 5 10 plus hours away. Any suggestions on scheduling?

And if comfortable sharing, how much did you end up spending on average?

You usually can request a date. But beware of trying to schedule back to back with traveling required - the auditions are always during the worst weather time of year and roads and airports can be closed. You need to allow extra time - and usually try to get there a day early even. I recommend reading some of the past threads about auditions.
Those articles were great, thanks! I am not worried about driving in bad weather unless truly dangerous conditions. My son has a very long break in February and I thought about driving and just staying the whole week and fitting in as many auditions as possible instead of driving back and forth and then depauw would be easy to fit in. He’d only miss 4 official days. The schools are 2 to 3 hours away from each other.

PM’ed you.
