I was just wondering how much an acting student’s chances of admission go up after passing prescreens for schools. I am sure it varies greatly by school, but any idea? TIA
You are right it varies by school, but safe to say that numbers applying are increasing each year. Seems like many schools get applications in the thousands, and the numbers of applicants they pass through to auditions is going to depend on how many they physically have the time to see, so that is probably fixed each year. Whether they attend all the Unifieds, or are just at one or two, or only do on-campus auditions will also impact the numbers they ultimately get to see.
So while your odds of acceptance are of course going to go up once you pass a prescreen, chances of getting in depends on how many they audition, as well as how many they are taking into their freshman class. So being one of 500 who passed prescreens at school A which takes 100 each year naturally gives you better odds than being one of 500 at school B which only takes 30. But as we all know, numbers only mean so much, and once someone gets into an audition room, they take the back seat to the magic, mysterious process that goes on there and sees both the auditors and the candidate figuring out if they are that magic “fit” for each other.
Sorry I don’t have any specific data on each school. I think some threads from years past might have references to parent talks where faculty mentioned application and audition numbers, but it will take some searching to find that. And chances are, the numbers would be even higher this year anyway.
Congrats on any prescreens you’ve passed, anyway!
Thank you!
@meohmyoh For DePaul last year we were told close to 1000 applied and 300 passed prescreen. Not sure how many acceptance offers went out but the class size ended up at 31.
Thank you. While every school is different, that offers perspective.
