Anyone received any merit award information from UChicago yet?

If so, please post what award you received and the amount if possible. I think these awards will be rolled out over next few months though according to their website. Just wondering if anyone has already heard. Thanks!

Nope

Nope either, really banking on that merit aid tho :confused: Their website says it’s rolling until April so I think we just have to wait right now

Any updates?

Nope :confused:

FWIW, last year my son learned of his award in mid-April. You might be in for a long wait.

^ Second that. We know another who had to wait last year. And even if UChicago is early on the merit, other schools won’t necessarily follow the same timeline. If you are trying to compare offers you may not be able to commit till Spring 2019. And there’s no hurry to anyway, now that housing queue no longer established by enrollment date.

Any idea of what amount/range of merit aid UChicago gives? Just wondering if it’s so nominal it won’t make a big difference.

@5hearts My understanding is about $3k total to $25k annually. D who got in EA 2 years ago, got $3k first. After emailing about MIT was cheaper for her to attend than U Chicago (we are full pay), she was given $20k a year. U Chicago stacks FA with “merit”, which is not true merit at that point. I think they also got rid of the NMF scholarship 2 years ago.

They didn’t get rid of the NMF scholarship, they just cut out their additional contribution to the $2,000/yr. College-Sponsored portion. That happened to the Class of 2021. ED’s were still given the $2,000, however.

how likely is receiving a merit??

My son, ED1 class of’22, who was a NMS received only the one time $2,000 from the college board. When he inquired about the College award, he was told that they now consider NMS in their calculations of who will get merit, but it isn’t a sure thing. I think it is really hard to determine who gets merit when everyone who gets in probably deserves some.

I got 10K in merit (University Scholar). I think it’s for National Hispanic Scholar, but I’m not sure.

Merit aid is generally used to get you to come to UChicago over another school. There have been many people I know in real life, posts I have seen here, and people posting on non-anonymous social media that claim that the admissions office was willing to give merit aid when they contacted the admissions office and said that they really want to come but, because of better offers from other schools, may have to go there instead. This works better (and perhaps may only work these days) if the school you may be “forced” to go to is one UChicago considers its peer - i.e. an elite private school.

With that in mind, the chances of someone admitted ED getting merit aid is probably close to 0 (they seem to be thinking about this as strict utilitarians - though naturally they can’t admit this publicly - and why would you waste limited funds on people who are obligated to attend?), but you have a very good chance if they liked you enough to admit you EA, because getting in EA means the admissions office liked you enough that they want to gamble on the risk of you not coming. So if you were admitted EA (or if you are from the future and were admitted RD - which means they really want you to come) and heard nothing, get back to the admissions office near May 1st and be ready to play hard ball.

Since deposit date is no longer linked to housing there’s no reason to not do this. The cards are in your hands.

Good luck!

@fluffnut9
Hi, when were you offered this award? My daughter is also NHS but she hasn’t received anything merit wise yet.

@PepperJo if you check the acceptance letter and scroll to the bottom, there should be an additional link for the merit award. I got it on the same day I was accepted.

@fluffnut9 have you been accepted ED1 or EA?

@fluffnut9
Thank you. There is no link on my daughter’s acceptance. Some students on the admitted students FB portal have reported merit, but they were from Chicago. I will email the FA office and the AO on Monday to get some clarification as to something I was told by admissions back in October about merit.

Are you In-State or OOS?
