Seems like anyone outside the service area got canned.

This is just wrong on so many levels. This service area stuff is pure crap. I see it as a slap in the face to every qualified in state applicant that applied. SDSU should be removed from the California STATE University system, because they are certainly not an institution that caters to the state as a whole, but rather a predetermined area that very well may not house the most qualified applicants. This is why SDSU continues to be a second rate academic institution with a laughable reputation outside of its "service area."

I understand the frustration of some of the folks here, but you have to understand that you being denied is not simply because you are out of the service area.

I know and see several people who were from outside the area who are now enrolled at SDSU, both as freshmen and transfers. You see it when you speak to people and in the number of out-of-state license plates around parking lots.

Therefore, not everybody "outside the service area got canned." There are variables and scenarios to consider, some that may be out of students' control (i.e. budget cuts).

No, I'm pretty sure it is because SDSU took the majority of the people from the service area. It ****es me off to no end when a person with a 2.7 GPA gets accepted just because they're in the service area. I and others worked our asses off to maintain a high GPA and get accepted, but do to SDSU's policies our effort seems to have gone to waste.

And let's set the record straight: there aren't many other variables to consider. The Cal State system does not even allow applicants to write essays outlining their academic interests or plans, that doesn't seem right to me. Maybe that's why SDSU and the CSU system has the reputation that it has. The acceptance process relies on grades only and the vast majority of us have taken almost the same classes, once again, variables? I'd like to see them.

I was not even planning on attending SDSU should I be accepted, but the principle of this issue is what irks me. What SDSU did is not right, period.

I agree! It's ridiculous how they only accepted the majority of applicants from in the service area. I know a few students from LAST YEAR that got accepted from my area (Inland Empire) and I'm sure it was easier for them then, but due to our budget cuts and crap, it was bad timing for us. It sucks for people like us who pushed all the way with high G.P.A.'s and pre-reqs completed, but was pushed away. I, seriously, wanted to get in because have their communicative disorders program because it had one of the best reputations out of ALL California schools. This is ********, but at least my transcripts looks good for grad school. lol ....almost...half way to go.... I will certainly apply for the grad program at SDSU

whats considered the service area? Because i live in northern california and thankfully, i was fortunate enough to get in. i wouldnt just blame rejections on SDSU alone. cal poly as well denied MANY people who had some really excellent grades and extra curriculars. if anything, you guys should be blaming budget cuts and the massive number of slots cut from the schools

I'm curious about the CSU admission process. How do they differentiate applicants who have the same GPA and relatively the same courses completed? They've no essay to judge us by, so how do they do it? Pick names out of a hat? Seems so.

I suspect they also consider the rigor of the course load that you've taken (number of AP/Honors courses) as well as the rigor of your senior year course load. GPA can be misleading if you're taking easier classes...

Honestly it really is because of these budget cuts. It's effecting all the CSU's. I go to Sac State and applying to SDSU was already hard enough since some of my classes wouldn't transfer unless I petitioned it when I got there. Out of 56,000 applicants a lot of us should have seen it comng that we weren't going to get in.

Honestly don't let it discourage you! :) If your someone like me, raise your GPA within this comin year so then when Fall 2010 comes around you'll have a higher rate of getting in.

Still says pending for me TODAY on webportal??? Seems like people know either way, why is mine still pending?? Im a Veteran if that has anything to do with it?

My daughters webportal still says pending. Under "admission status date" it says Feb 9, 2009. She auditioned for the dance major program Feb 14, 2009 and was accepted. I called admissions on Friday and was told that her ap is still on hold while the admissions dept waits for paperwork regarding her audition from the dance dept. I hope that means she was accpeted to the school otherwise I would assume they would have denied her and not waited for the response from the dance dept. It sure seems like we are the last people waiting for a response!!
