Anyone visit High Point University?

NCmentor - you are right about Forbes, as well as ALL polls because they are all skewed - ALL statistics as well - which we all learn in Statistics 101, which is why I will still maintain that you must VISIT to see for yourself. Top tier? Depends upon what you are “tiering”. We are tiering our daughter’s happiness first and then her education. Again, to each his own - priorities.

As for “a few love” HPU and it’s “okay for some” - that’s a true understatement. I am here right now to drop off our DD for her second year and I can tell you first hand, the adjective should be “MANY”. The energy, quality of people, joy, excitement is abound. But, what is most unique about it? In a word? HPU is a THOUGHTFUL campus - in every way. This is our second year and our enthusiasm for the school has not waned, in fact the opposite is true. No question, the #1 rank of ‘up and coming’ is a true one and we are excited to be a part of it.

Wait and see.

Agree with MMAMOM2011. Dropped our son off for his freshman year (he did attend summer experience). HPU is the right fit for HIM. There is a great excitement and energy on the campus. It may not be for everyone. I don’t understand why people try to make college choice a competition. I agree that it is about the “fit” for your child. HPU is the right fit for some and the wrong fit for others.

I think the amenities, publicity, and merit scholarships are attracting more students-then you will see the selectivity and SAT etc change. In a few years people who scoff now will notice that this school is on more radars and more people they know will be applying. I think it will be more like Elon.

I’m going to the Open House in Nov-anyone else?

"Hard to believe…but then again, it’s hearsay. It’s important to stick to the facts and see for yourself. "

Well, anything that you don’t hear/see yourself is hearsay; by that logic one would discount or dismiss everything on these boards. As for HPU, post #91 is the second post to relay a FIRST-HAND account where the president made offensive an inappropriate remarks regarding the role of attractiveness in the university’s selection process.

I’m not sure whether HPU will ever be Elon, or that it needs to be more like Elon - - but the unrelenting focus on the superficial, whether in the form of ostentatious “Ritz Carlton”/country club facilities or the president’s comments to prospects regarding ugly/pretty students will always be a turn-off to those who think college should be more about substance than style.

Nighttime’s post is at least the third report of the president talking about ugly/pretty applicants. Certainly there’s more to HPU that a ham-fisted attempt at humor that, at the very least, fell flat - - but this class of “joke” is apparent part of the president’s repertoire (or schtick). Sad.

yes - whats your major going to be

WOW! What an impressive university. Not just the pristine campus with advanced technology, but the heart and attitude-and yes, the academics, student achievement and professors. Nothing inappropriate said by prez, but he does joke and it does not fall flat.

My D is leaning towards math/Actuarial Science or Pre-Pharm.

And it’s obvious that this school is becoming harder to get into-soon it will be difficult.

I talked with the college rep from High Point University at our school’s college fair. After listening to her detail the academic progress and efforts the school was making, I asked her whether she was aware of how things like the visitor signs were being perceived. It was clear from her body language that she was but rather than answer the question she asked it back to me … how is it perceived? I said that it seems polarizing … some thought it to be fine while others so it as marketing ‘shtick’ that has led to many disparaging remarks on Internet forums. She responded that they like to treat their students “special” said something about the direction their University President was taking them and that High Point wasn’t going to apologize for treating their students well.

I just nodded my head and said “thanks” and went on my way. Candidly, I felt like responding that there is a big difference between treating students “special” and engaging in efforts that serve to counteract the positive academic efforts the school was doing. But from the look she was giving me it was clear that she had embraced the ‘High Point way or the highway’ approach and did not welcome other viewpoints.

I’ve visited High Point twice over the last two years. I’m looking to transfer from a school in upstate New York for the fall of 2010. I applied to High Point, Winthrop, and U of South Carolina. I got accepted to Winthrop. I haven’t heard back from High Point or U of SC. I’ve got a 3.6 college GPA, I should be able to get into HPU?

As a student, I liked everything I saw while checking out High Point. I was able to meet the president of the college and that meant a lot to me. I liked his “open door” policy. If I get in I’ll be majoring in Sport Management with a minor in Finance. One of the biggest things I like about HPU is how welcoming the college was. Coming from New York, people aren’t so nice up here =]

I’m still looking at what type of scholarships they offer for transfer students, I haven’t been able to find much. I see a lot of stuff on their website for freshman but not transfer students. If I can get a solid academic scholarship, I’ll be attending HPU in the fall of 2010.

My son visited High Point University last weekend. The parking signs, ice cream truck and snack kiosk made us laugh but the admissions people explained that it was part of their attempt to make the students feel valued. We were most impressed with the commitment to help the students succeed. They seem to recognize how difficult the transition from high school can be and are ready to help each student reach their potential and catch them BEFORE they fall. Small class size and personal attention from faculty are a huge selling point as is their belief that a college education should not only teach the course materials but also prepare the student for the real world. Yes, the campus has the wow factor but the real impressive points are dedication to the students. My initial concern was that this is a college in transition. They do not have the history, reputation and alumni base of many of the larger schools my son is considering. However, maybe they will try harder to help him succeed since they are a small school looking to build a reputation and not looking to weed out the weakest freshman.

axcmom- there is no question of the old adage ringing true: ‘to each his own’. High Point is a perfect fit for my daughter - who btw was accepted to many other reputable schools. In my experience, I have found that WHERE you go to college is less important than your person. Developing that person - to us - is what college is all about. I know my DD will be successful because of the person she is. I know that HPU will create a learning environment that will foster that and she will blossom there. My money is on HPU as a hot school - definitely one to watch. Time will tell.

MMAMom2011, I couldn’t agree more with what you said. High Point has all the momentum. By the time a student in this years freshman class graduates, High Point will be well beyond a household name.

In response to “ctyankee”:

I honestly don’t understand what you’re saying. You thought that the signs outweighed what you said was positive academics? That’s just idiotic. THEY ARE JUST SIGNS. I’ve toured High Point University, and all they say is that they want students to focus on academics. It’s why they have kiosks set up for food, (so students can grab something to eat on the way to class) it’s why the library picks up your books, etc.

Why would they want the students to spend time away from their studies necessarily? However, probably the more important question is why do their signs bother you so much?

My son attends High Point University, and we live in Cary, NC (near Raleigh). Our local CBS affiliate ran a piece on the President of High Point and the campus. Thought everyone might find it interesting.

Thanks for sharing that video clip - makes me even more enthusiastic about our upcoming visit!

Hi Cathy. Thanks for the video clip. Funny as I was watching I spotted my daughter in the video three times in Nido’s freshman seminar!

Glad to share the video.

Just read that their apps are up 35% and the freshman class is 93% full with deposits (they sent an email)
