Anyone waiting anxiously for Match Day (3/15/13) now (3/21/14)?

Although some residency programs only provide minimal info, the AMA’s Freida Online is a useful spot for specific residency info. Unlike past years, it currently requires one to create an account but it doesn’t appear to be a big deal to do so.

http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/education-careers/graduate-medical-education/freida-online.

^Thanks, I will pass it to my D.

Miami, your DD should talk to her school about the recommended number of schools. She can also double check the likely highest number chosen on SDN. You don’t always know a posters back story and stats, but I see posters applying to 40-60-100 programs and getting few interviews. Yet DD applied to a much more reasonable number and got enough. invites to decline some.

The first question is to how many programs to apply. Second is how many interviews to attend. Third is how many to rank. Even for the least competitive it seems like ranking ten is a minimum recommendation.

^She is done / doing all of the above. Information that is coming from various resources vary significantly. As you have mentioned, she was recommended to apply to about 30-35, but yet others have applyed to all (over 100). She was told that she might get the same number of interviews (the goal is 10) no matter if she applied to 30 or 100+. She was also aware / used the website AMA’s Freida Online. She is using SDN, talking to person in charge of residency and chair of the specialty at her school. The more she talks, the more she gets confused. She would like to listen to residency director the most because this person advice was very specific to D’s situation. On the other hand, she is afraid to be left behind if she applies to a low number (45 is a low number in comparison to others, she has talked to current residents and few students who will apply to her specialty).
Anybody knows where to find the list of Preliminaries? D. has the list of Transitionals (her preference). But if Preliminary is at the D’s preferred location, she might consider it.

I remember my daughter mentioning an email that went around from her program just prior to the interview season for students participating in the upcoming match asking for contact from students who did not have at least ten interviews.

I cannot wait for it to be over. D has been to numerous programs where she fits and will get good training. Most of the programs seem to like her as well but I have gotten the impression from her that it can be hard to tell.

D once brought up that almost every year in her department there seems to be a highly qualified student that for whatever reason does poorly (considering their credentials) on Match Day. She has been told by a number of students from the class ahead of hers that they experienced having a program tell them that they were going to be ranked to match, the student responded in kind and the student did not get in. So all bets seem to be off. I suppose it could come down to a program ranking ten people when they only have five spots. Yes they liked you, but not enough.

I find it remarkable that at this stage of the game it is still a cr*p shoot. D will be fine but honestly, Match Day can’t come soon enough.

BTW, the students who did “poorly” that I mentioned above did match…they just matched surprisingly low on their list.

Miami: “Anybody knows where to find the list of Preliminaries?

I think the difficulty with offering an answer to your question is that most people posting will be very limited to their own or their kid’s specific experiences. As such they probably will not have this info at their fingertips especially as it relates to a specific specialty or region. As an example, S has been interested in a specific medical subspecialty from day one and only researched out categorical IM programs with warm weather locations being an important criteria. He never looked into preliminary/transitional programs.

“The more she talks, the more she gets confused.”

D seems to be experiencing information overload, sort of can’t see the forest for the trees kind of thing. It’s no wonder that combined with clerkship demands, Step 2 approaching, angst ridden classmates (with very much different goals) ratcheting up residency chatter, SDN, Freida, etc., your D is becoming more confused. It’s normal and will only get worse as D gets closer to hitting the send application button. Hang in there. Match Day will be here sooner than you think.

Somemom’s comment above (you don’t always know a posters back story and stats) talking about the number of interviews offered is quite on point in that what will matter initially to a residency Program Director will be D’s med school track record and Step 1. I know what follows may seem obvious but based on S’s experiences I’d tell D to stay focused on the things in her immediate control that still matter (Step 2, obtaining strong clerkship evals/grades, obtaining or solidifying contacts with rec letter writers, talking with residency advisor (not so much with students, etc.). As to AMA Freida, encourage D not to get involved in various programs minutiae (differences in benefits, number of call nights, free parking or not, etc.). Her head will explode. Since it is approx. 8 months until she’ll apply, for the next couple of months, approach a potential list like college or med school, (i.e., perceived reaches, perceived safeties, etc.). From there hopefully she along with input from her advisor (not classmates) can narrow list down to a more manageable number of programs where she could be happy and is not a killer as to interview related issues (travel, cost, etc.). Good luck to your D.

Shoot. Me.

I think DD would agree with me, I found her to be incredibly stressed in the nine months leading up to residency applications. She had expected to relax emotionally and enjoy clinical, instead she was angsting about all the decisions.
Once she submitted the app, she totally relaxed.

I just went through each page and searched for “21” and saw that no one appears to have mentioned that this year, match day is actually a week later than normal (no idea why) and will be March 21st. Just an FYI.

Whoa! Seriously? Wow, DD may be aware of that, though I think she is living in the moment all through interview season, just taking it one day at a time. But I was mentally assuming we would know what comes next March 15/16

Yeah, I started this thread (when it existed over in the Parent Cafe) last year when my future son-in-law was going through Match the first time. He has decided to change specialties and location and this year is “suicide” matching to hopefully be in the same location as his soon-to-be wife (our daughter) who is working on her PhD and cannot move.

Their wedding date? March 22nd.

Match Week begins on Monday, March 17, 2014, when applicants learn whether they matched to a program. That email lets you know that you have matched, just not where you matched.
Sending good thoughts to you, your daughters and sons, and future son-in-law, too. I would also say that being with D on Match Day was very important. I’m sure it is different at every med school, but all of D’s classmates had parents or spouses with them. There were even some siblings.

Yeah, many families present for match day at my school to. In some ways it feels like a bigger deal than graduation to me.

Wow! Next year I’ll have a White Coat AND a Match Day to attend.

“D once brought up that almost every year in her department there seems to be a highly qualified student that for whatever reason does poorly (considering their credentials) on Match Day.”
-This is scary especially after an incident of #1 Med. student at local Med. School (not my D’s SOM) did NOT match last year.

I have no idea what we will do. Tough for both of us to be gone at the same time .

Best wishes for all that are hoping and waiting.

:)

How did the title change, what’s happening!?!?!?

Also, how did CC manage to change my all caps post into lowercase?

Moderator wisdom since the date is different? I would assume they wanted to make the display data accurate.

DD just finished her last interview and that program is already ranked in the top group in her mind. I am looking forward to hearing the final list.
