I recently heard an advice that instead of being in a thousand clubs, you can choose to focus on one single EC, and little else, and still be able to get into competitive college. Has anyone verified this?
Please post your information here so we future applicants may find relief in this college admission process:
College(s) acceptance:
Your single EC:

Race: (if you can)
Comments on how you got in:

I don’t have many ECs, but I have heard that it’s better to be extremely active in a select few (either leadership position or doing a lot in general) than to be somebody who just attends meetings for a thousand different clubs. This makes sense imo.

You realize that in most of the school forums, there are results threads that have the student’s stats and EC’s and whether or not they got in? Why not looking at those since they’re already there?

I think I am asking other people. Yes, I’ve peaked at some of the acceptance statements in other threads, and a very small number of those claim they took one or two significant ECs. But if we concentrate a topic here, then we’ll have more chance to ask question, to hear their stories as a more intimate manner. So please don’t frustrate me by telling me to go and peak other forums; I found the topic for a reason.

jgraider: I feel you want to provoke me into something serious here. If you don’t contribute, please stand aside. I’m asking a question at the beginning of the topic, and would appreciate people who actually experienced this kind of unique way to get into college. I’m reading a book on it, but I want to see, when concentrated, how many people the topic can yield. And by what you’ve said, I know you’re not one of them.

belly: I feel you’re looking at a tree in a forest of issues. The number (high or low) of ECs isn’t really the issue. THe issue is DO YOU STAND OUT in a crowded pool of applicants. Yes, there are some stand outs with one EC. There are stand outs with multiple ECs. There are common students with one EC and also with multiple ECs.

My own EC list was short: worked an outside restaurant job and held leadership roles within my school. That was it. But I did this as an Asian at a predominantly black school while pursuing crazy rigorous academics. Also I wasn’t focused on being a 4.0 wonk but rather, stretched myself at every opportunity. Colleges recognized this and I was accepted at all applied, eventually matriculating at an HYP.

Not sure how you came to this conclusion, but okay…

And all I’m saying is that if you really want to concentrate all the information into one thread for everyone else like you said, then there is nothing stopping you from doing something like this person did:

Thank you T26E4. Finally I got someone who understands what I am looking for. What are leadership roles you’re talking about? Are you heavily involved or just normally be the president?
jgraider: Okay. I’ve got my own way. This is how I want the thread to be. Please don’t suggest anything else. Thank you
