Someone from my school got into Yale last year with a 2.4. Then again, he had straight A's his Junior and Seniors years and is brilliant. His essays were amazing. His ECs and standardized tests were mediocre, though.

How could he have a 2.4 with straight as in junior and senior year? did he get all c's and d's in sophomore year?

maybe he failed a class or 2 freshmen or sophomore year. I have a 2.95 weighted gpa and got a 1810 on sats. wait listed at RPI, WPI, Stevens tech, in at RIT, IIT and Clark, and rejected from Northeastern and Virginia Tech. Although it has probably gone up a bit since it was calculated middle of my junior year. However, I think my essays and ecs have helped quite a bit. I didn't really submit anything to vt which is probably why i was rejected. Their app has no essay or anything, it basically just asks for your name and s.s. number. That school wasn't really high on my list, my gc thought i would get in so i applied.

I had a 4.0 unweighted taking honors and AP classes and a 1980 SAT. I was waitlisted at BC and William and Mary. I was rejected at Cornell. I got into Penn State.

broken_symlink: Wow, that's great (I'm surprised that you would be rejected at notheastern but waitlisted at WPI)

3.435 UW, in at Duke, Cornell, Rice, WashU, Tufts, and Carnegie Mellon

anyway what I meant to say was that GPA is not the only thing that matters when getting into a school

i have a legacy at WPI. My mom went there and my grandfather worked in a bio lab there. I'm not sure if I really want to go there though, because my grandparents still live in Worcester, and I don't live all that far from the school myself. Clark also might be too close. I am going to visit IIT tomorrow. I really like their math department based on what I have seen on their site. Hopefully I will like the rest of the school.

janas.joker, what EAs were you involved in????

And were u a legacy?

d4r7h3v1l, how are your other stats? like SATs and ECs?

3.4

Nd, Ucla(oos), Bc, Unc(oos)

bump, this is a positive thread....

I know right?!!! Obviously, my low UW is going to weigh aginst me- but seeing that there ARE people who got into Duke, JHU, Tufts, and other top schools with not-perfect gpas makes me more hopeful!!

3.2 UW, top 20% -> Bard -> Wesleyan (transfering in as a sophomore)

Awesome thread.. I have hope! =)

With a 3.4 do I have a chance at these schools?

Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech
Penn State
Purdue
U Illinois - Urbana Champaign
Carnegie Mellon
University of Florida

I am a URM (hispanic, both parents immigrated in 1990), have good EC's, and a 2180 SAT w/800 in math. Class rank is 25%ish and my average grade is almost exactly 91, I took 2 AP
s 2 honors this year too, 6 honors classes total freshman/sophmore year. My school doesn't do weighted GPA. I'm afraid that since I keep hearing that GPA and class rank are the most important factors in admission, I'm gonna be rejected based on that, even though everything else is good (plus my grades show an upward trend, this year my GPA is 3.75).

I think someone got into Stanford with like a 1800 on the SAT...
I was reading around on the forum... I forget where I saw it...

Here is a little update on what happened to me since i last posted in this thread. I got into WPI, RPI, and withdrew my app from Stevens Tech. So, I wonder what that means about college admissions.

From my memory, 2 CC members got into top schools with low GPA.
1) About 3.3 uw GPA, ED to Columbia, he took a gap year, screen name=Denzera(sp?)
2) About 3.3 uw GPA, ED to Pomona, screen name=BrassMonkey(sp?)

I think it helps to apply ED.

i'd like to know as well =]
