I'm going to be doing an interview and plan on asking about recruting timelines, slots vs tips, general academic guidelines, etc.

Anything specific that anyone would like me to ask?

Yes, thank you.

Can he provide some clarification on the slots v tips distinction. I’ve had it explained to me more than a few times by NESCAC coaches and I am still confused. My understanding is that they have a few slots that they can use for students who would not otherwise get admitted to the school. When I asked about how the other recruits get admitted, however, the answer always gets a little more wishy washy. It seems to me that those other recruits need to be admitted on their merits, but the coaches always refer to “a little help” that they can give, etc. I never really understood what “a little help” means?

How often does a coach see a recruit he wants but because he thinks this recruit might otherwise be admitted without his help, the coach doesn’t use a slot on him? Is this just urban legend?

Also, how is it determined how many slots and tips a coach gets, is it the same for all schools or is specific to a school like the AI is?

Thanks, Varska.

Hi Varska…I would like to ask 1. I heard some coaches have to apply for a slot in order to get one. Is this true? 2. If you are a slotted recruit is it a 99 % chance of admit? 3. What is the difference between a tip and being on the coaches list? Or is it the same thing?

How does the coach handle official visits? How many OV are offered per slot? What does the coach look for in an athlete when he/she is on the OV? When are slot offers generally made- before, during, or after an OV?

Thanks

Thanks Varska! I am interested to in hearing more about the the whole accelerated recruiting timelines in DI lax and how the DIII level is affected, if at all. Also, the whole lax summer showcase thing is overwhelming and can be very time-intensive and expensive. What are a few of the main showcases where you are likely to find mostly coaches from NESCAC, Ivy and other top academic schools? A lot of lax players these days are specializing and choosing to play year-round in order to develop their lax-specific skills. Does this coach (and others he knows) value this most in a lacrosse recruit or would they prefer to recruit a multi-sport varsity athlete (with appropriate lax skills, of course)?
